I found a reference to this WWII USAAF patch on a website (http://www.vetshome.com/military_arm...s_patches5.htm), describing it as an "Aviation Cadet Advanced" insignia.
After completing the academy training, they were sent to Army Advanced Training course.
When they finished the advanced course, they received their wings and commission, usually graduating as a lieutenant.
