Topic: Advanced Disk Filing System

Advanced Disc Filing System - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Advanced Disc Filing System (ADFS) is a computing file system particular to the Acorn computer range introduced in the disc drive add-on for the Acorn Electron.
Acorn's original Disc Filing System was very limited in that very few files could be stored on a disk, and directory and file names were restricted to 1 and 7 characters respectively.
This can be thought of as being similar to the type attributes stored in Apple's HFS file system, only with much less information.

BBC Master - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Master ET The ET (Econet Terminal) system was designed for use in a network and as such had no tape or disk interfaces but had the Econet interface fitted as standard (it was usually an option requiring the addition of extra chips).
Only the ADFS file system could be used, preventing backward compatibility with DFS disks (though it was possible to load a 1770 DFS ROM into sideways RAM, or to insert a ROM or EPROM containing it).
The remainder of the system was housed in the same unit as the keyboard, much like a conventional Master 128.

 Halfbakery: Disk-level filing system
The software for running the filing system is kept either on flashable memory chip in the hard disk, or in a reserved space at the start of the disk.
As a result of this move, the connection between the CPU and the hard disk is used by far less information, ensuring that it doesn't clog up the motherboard for all the other components that have to use the same channels, such as main memory, network and other disks.
File management is not usually farmed out to an auxilary processor as might be the case with some processing tasks (domain name management is an example of which I'm aware).

Advanced Disk Filing System (ADFS) is the name specifically given to the disk operating system in BBC Master, Archimedes and Acorn computers.
It superseded the DFS (Disk Filing System) in the older BBC microcomputer.
When the ball rotates the rollers, the disk interrupts the photosensor assembly and opens it, depending on whether a hole in the disk is located between the transmitter and receiver of the photosensor assembly.

An illustrated Guide to the File System
In these pages, we will review formatting, file systems, etc. We will start with a general view, then go in depth about FAT formatting, which is (still) the most common.
It is an advanced 32 bit file system, which in all respects is far superior to FAT, except for possible usage.
We see that that the file system is an integral part of the operating system.

When the disk is in the drive a light shining through this hole activates a sensor sending a pulse to the floppy disk controller indicating that the disk is positioned at the beginning of a track (sector 0).
Disk Errors While we are discussing the layout (configuration) of disks, there is a way of checking them for faults which could be caused by such misuse as bending, dirt etc. A faulty write operation can also make the disk unreadable.
File Protection Many of the commands previously discussed must be used with care as they could accidentally be used to erase a valuable file.

Because it is fairly easy to copy all the files in a particular folder to a floppy disk or a Zip disk, storing nothing but data files in a folder makes it easy to create a backup copy of your data.
In other words, the filing system you create on a disk is as individual as the one you create in a filing cabinet.
You can have your system as orderly or as freeform as you like, as long as it works for you and makes it easy for you to find the information you need.

I suppose the first Copylock System was for the Atari ST in 1987, prior to that I had protected most of Acornsoft's floppy games, but the system used then was quite primitive in comparison and not known under the Copylock name.
Trace would supply format files to read-in standard formatted disks, but if the format was non-standard, as in a protected disk then the duplicator would have to write a format file of their own to read-in the floppy.
As for the protected floppy disk, this was created not by the host machine, but by using the same Trace machine as used by the disk duplicators.
