Green Car Congress: GM Adds Two-Mode Hybrid Transmission to Saab BioPower Hybrid Concept
At the upcoming British International Motor Show, GM is unveiling a new version of the Saab BioPower Hybrid (earlier post) that incorporates an application of the two-mode hybrid transmission GM is co-developing with DaimlerChrysler and BMW Group.
Commonly described as a two-mode hybrid due to the low- and high-speed electric continuously variable transmission (ECVT) modes, the system also incorporates four fixed gear ratios for a total of six operating functions.
It would be interesting, also, to find out how much weight this system adds, and what the difference is in highway and overall fuel economy between the hybrid system and non-hybrid system.

Science Fair Projects - Advanced Hybrid System 2
Advanced Hybrid System 2 is a set of hybrid car technologies jointly developed by General Motors and DaimlerChrysler.
The system was first used in the General Motors transit busses deployed in 2004.
When GM and DaimlerChrysler engineers realized how similar their hybrid work was, they decided to join forces and share technology.

Furthermore, the lubrication systems of internal combustion engines are inherently least effective immediately after the engine starts; since it is upon startup that the majority of engine wear occurs, the frequent starting and stopping such systems cause may reduce the lifespan of the engine considerably.
A weakness of a series hybrid system, however, is that series hybrids require separate motor and generator portions, which can be combined in some parallel hybrid designs; the combined efficiency of the motor and generator will be lower than that of a conventional transmission, offsetting the efficiency gains that might otherwise be realized.
In some cases, manufacturers are producing hybrid vehicles that used the added energy provided by the hybrid systems to give vehicles a power boost, rather than significantly improved fuel efficiency compared to their traditional counterparts.

Cars - Advanced Hybrid System 2
This system amplifies the output of the electric motors similarly to the way in which a conventional transmission amplifies the torque of an internal combustion engine.
The system was first used in the General Motors transit buses deployed in 2004.
The system was to be introduced for the 2007 model year in the full-sized GM SUVs, but these were delayed for one year for unspecified reasons.

 Plug-in Hybrids - Wikicars
A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) is a hybrid which has additional battery capacity and the ability to be recharged from an external electrical outlet.
All of these systems leave the existing HSD system mostly unchanged and would be fairly simple to apply to other hybrid configurations.
The Advanced Hybrid System 2 (AHS2) could be offered with additional battery capacity and charging capabilities as an option, costing about $3000 if offered by the manufacturer.

A series hybrid is similar to an electric car which is recharged by electricity from a stationary fossil fuel power plant, except that the power plant is carried on board.
Diesel-electric locomotives may not always be considered hybrids, not having energy storage on board, unless they are fed with electricity via a collector for short distances (for example, in tunnels with emission limits), in which case they are better classified as dual-mode vehicles.

By using this sophisticated hybrid technology, the Vue Green Line 2-mode Hybrid is expected to deliver up to a 45-percent improvement in combined city and highway fuel economy compared with the non-hybrid Vue, based on current federal test procedures.
The front-wheel-drive, 2-mode hybrid system optimizes city and highway fuel efficiency by integrating two electric continuously variable modes with four fixed mechanical gear ratios.
By using two electric modes and four fixed gear ratios, the 2-mode hybrid system’s electric motors are smaller, compared with traditional “one-mode” hybrid systems, and impose no significant limitation on the size of the engine.

The CLEAR Act: Tax Incentives for Advanced Vehicles
In the House, Representative Camp introduced the companion bill, H.R. Unfortunately, the House Ways and Means Committee dramatically weakened the bill by removing the hybrid tax credit and replacing it with a credit for diesel vehicles, which are 3–10 times dirtier than the hybrids and other technologies targeted in the original bill.
In May 2002, an IRS press release declared gasoline/electric hybrids eligible for tax deductions as "clean fuel" vehicles under the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (PL 103-486).
If the CLEAR Act passes this year, there will be generous, performance-based tax deductions available for the purchase of a wide range of hybrids, battery electric vehicles, fuel cells, and alternative-fuel buses and trucks through 2010.
