Advanced Mobile Phone System - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Advanced Mobile Phone System or AMPS is the analog mobile phone system standard developed by Bell Labs, and officially introduced in the Americas in 1984.
Though analog is no longer considered advanced at all, the relatively seamless cellular switching technology AMPS introduced was what made the original mobile radiotelephone practical, and was considered quite advanced at the time.
There are some phones capable of supporting AMPS, TDMA and GSM all in one phone (using the GAIT standard; see the Nokia 6340, for example); however, AMPS/CDMA phones supports nearly seamless roaming between CDMA and AMPS (with the loss of some features when in AMPS mode, such as text messaging) while GAIT phones cannot.

The major drawbacks to this system were that the portable phones had to have transmitters powerful enough to broadcast their signal over 40 or 50 miles, so the only practical use for these phones was in cars.
Also, since the government did not see these mobile phones as a high priority for radio space, a rather small number of radio frequencies was allocated.
Under digital systems, different compression and methods of using the available bandwidth allow between three and ten cell phone calls in the same amount of space as an analog call.

Cell phone buying guide - CNET reviews
Buying a cell phone is more than a matter of picking the most feature-rich or slickest-looking device--choosing the right carrier is the critical factor.
With that in mind, if you frequently travel overseas, for example, a tri- or quad-band GSM phone will do the trick; look for GSM 900/1800/1900 or GSM 850/900/1800/1900 when shopping for a world phone.
Analog calls use more battery life, some services may not be available, and roaming charges can be hefty, but if you find yourself in a rural area and absolutely have to make a call, they can be a lifesaver.
