Topic: Advanced Mobile Telephone System

Advanced Mobile Phone System - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS) is the analog mobile phone system standard developed by Bell Labs, and officially introduced in the Americas in 1984.
Though analog is no longer considered advanced at all, the relatively seamless cellular switching technology AMPS introduced was what made the original mobile radiotelephone practical, and was considered quite advanced at the time.
These cells are what made the AMPS system successful because they allowed for frequency reuse so that many people could reuse the same channel in different parts of the system without interference.

The Early Mobiles   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
The Nordic Mobile Telephone system (NMT) was put into public service at the turn of the year 1981/82.
The mobile telephone exchange, a computer operated digital exchange, automatically registered where the cellphone was located.
The NMT system was equipped with several advanced functions, that were part of the ordinary telephone network later.

Telephone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unlike a mobile phone, a cordless telephone is considered to be landline because it is only useable within a short distance of a small personal or domestic base station connected to a fixed phone line.
The very early history of the telephone is a confusing morass of claim and counterclaim, which was not clarified by the huge mass of lawsuits which hoped to resolve the patent claims of individuals.
Some mobile telephones, especially those used in remote locations, where constructing a cell network would be too unprofitable or difficult, instead communicate directly with an orbiting satellite.

 Radio Glossary
When a portable or mobile telephone user crosses from one cell to another while talking, a central computer in the cellular system automatically reroutes the conversation from one transmitter to another, eliminating interference between callers and allowing each channel to be used several times simultaneously.
Telephone interconnect and intercity channels are used in the conventional mode.) Because of their efficient use of limited frequencies, trunked systems have become the standard in public safety communications.
On trunking systems, no agency uses a single frequency: Instead, several frequencies are utilized and either multiple agencies, or multiple divisions of a single large agency, operate in separate "fleets" and "sub-fleets" where units only hear the radio traffic of their own division by means of computer-controlled technology.

 Introduction to Mobile Telephone Systems
This book explains the different types of mobile telephone technologies and systems from 1st generation analog to 3rd generation digital broadband.
Mobile telephone technologies, systems, and services have dramatically changed over the past 2 years.
Some of these changes include the increase in mobile telephone customers from 300 million to 1.3 billion customers within 5 years and the shift of focus from adding new voice customers to providing advanced services such as data transfer, web browsing, and software downloads.

These early mobile telephone systems can be distinguished from earlier closed radiotelephone systems in that they were available as a commercial service that was part of the public switched telephone network, with their own telephone numbers, rather than part of a closed network such as a police radio or taxi dispatch system.
These mobile telephones were usually mounted in cars or trucks, though briefcase models were also made.
Typically, the transceiver (transmitter-receiver) was mounted in the vehicle trunk and attached to the "head" (dial, display, and handset) mounted near the driver seat.

The latter system was designed and built by Qualcomm, and became the seed which helped Qualcomm engineers to invent Soft Handoff and fast power control, the necessary technologies that made CDMA practical and efficient for terrestrial cellular communications.
TDMA systems must carefully synchronize the transmission times of all the users to ensure that they are received in the correct timeslot and do not cause interference.
If a mobile device reaches the edge of the cell currently serving its call, it is told to break its radio link and quickly tune to the frequency of one of the neighbouring cells where the call has been moved by the network due to the mobile's movement.

Third-generation mobile systems are faced with several challenging technical issues, such as the provision of seamless services across both wired and wireless networks and universal mobility.
Advanced multiple access techniques are also being investigated, and two promising proposals have evolved, one based on wideband CDMA and another that uses a hybrid TDMA/CDMA/FDMA approach.

While PCS was originally envisioned as an advanced mobile telephone system based on a microsell architecture, market forces are driving it in the direction of a system similar to digital cellular but operating at higher frequencies.
Realization of the global PCS system will depend on establishing unternationally recognized standards, international agreements regarding use authorizations (completion of the ITU frequency coordination does not provide a guarantee that the satellite system will be authorized to provide space segment capacity for use in any particular country).

Although not related to the mobile telephony of today, Bell's experimenting was a first: radiated electromagnetic waves had carried the human voice.
She would hook them over a pair of telephone wires, seeking a pair that were free.
Now, telephone companies themselves had portable telephones before this, especially to test their lines, and armed forces would often tap into existing lines while their divisions were on the move, but I still think this is the first regularly occurring, authorized, civilian use of a mobile telephone.
