  armada international: 6/00-001 (Full Article)
Sighting systems, where provided, are of the most basic type, usually being limited to a sight line painted on the barrel close to the muzzle and (perhaps) a simple bubble sight for setting elevation angles.
Of course, it is possible that 81.4/82 mm mortars with composite barrels could replace 60 mm mortars, but at present the accent seems to be on 120 mm mortars replacing their medium equivalents, even if such a prospect is still a long way off in the future.
Mortar turret installations appear to have replaced the trend current of a decade or so ago when batteries of four or more barrels were carried over the rear of wheeled or tracked carriers.

 HIGH-ANGLE HELL: The Infantry Mortar
Mortars were once seen as the weapons of the small fry -- but recent developments have brought about improved mortars that can decimate an area of thousands of square meters in an instant -- at a fraction of the usual size and cost of traditional artillery.
A mortar, by simple definition, is a weapon consists of a tube into which a mortar shell is dropped.
Future systems based on this foundation are planned to have an optional thermal imager, and extended range capability, and a greater selection of fuses and warheads.

Counter-mortar operations in the Sunni Triangle Infantry Magazine - Find Articles
From August to February 2004, the enemy quickly recognized that they were running out of mortar systems and adapted their TTPs to keep the mortar systems they used.
And third, the enemy would load the mortar system in the back of a truck (covering it with fruit or grass) and depart the area of operation (AO) using routes that would egress away from friendly units moving to the POO.
These systems are very effective if the enemy is allowed to fire from the same general points of origin without interdiction or repercussion by coalition forces.
