Sleep Disorders Glossary, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center
Advanced Sleep Phase Syndrome (ASPS) occurs when a person's "body clock" (i.e., circadian rhythm) is set to fall asleep very early in the afternoon.
Limit-setting sleep disorder is more common for children who are fully ambulatory and have developed receptive and expressive language skills (typically after age 2).
Overnight sleep studies involve observing a child's sleep in a sleep laboratory in order to better understand problems that could be causing the sleep disorder.

 Advanced Sleep Phase Syndrome
Advanced sleep phase syndrome is a disorder in which the major sleep episode is advanced in relation to the desired clocktime, that results in symptoms of compelling evening sleepiness, an early sleep onset, and an awakening that is earlier than desired.
Individuals with advanced sleep phase syndrome who attempt to work evening or night shifts would have difficulty staying awake during the evening and early morning hours.
Advanced sleep phase syndrome is treated with chronotherapy or bright light therapy.

Consequently, sleep, the one environment that soothes and rebuilds the body, is undermined by stress and anxiety.
People who associate anxiety with their conventional sleep environment typically find it easier to sleep in unfamiliar environments, such as a hotel room, a friend’s house, or the couch, where sleep-preventive associations are absent.
Inadequate sleep hygiene consists of all the habits that are not conducive to sleep longevity, like late-night exercise, late-night stressful activities (e.g., balancing the checkbook right before bedtime), late-night consumption of alcohol or caffeine, sleeping with loud noise, and sleeping on a poor mattress.

Sleep deprivation and this misalignment of rhythms are two of the most important factors in decreased performance and increased accident rates associated with night work, and may also impact other health consequences of shift work (e.g., digestive and cardiovascular).
An alternative approach to use, when the direction (either advancing or delaying rhythms) is important, requires bright light exposure aimed to one side or the other of the expected temperature minimum, and gradually moved closer on successive days so that it eventually would come close enough to produce the desired direction of phase shift.
These children have a sleep disorder that is debilitating for them and for their families: they sleep in short 'snatches' throughout the day and night, with a complete lack of sleep consolidation.

Advanced Sleep Phase Syndrome (ASPS) - Phases of the daily sleep/wake cycle are advanced with respect to clock time.  This is classified as a circadian rhythm disorder.   The sleep phase occurs well ahead of the conventional bedtime and the tendency is to wake up too early.
Dyssomnia - a disorder of sleep or wakefulness; not a parasomnia
Phase advance - movement to a position earlier in the 24 hour sleep - wake cycle of a period of sleep or wake; for example, a shift of the sleep phase from 11 p.m.

Sleep phase disorders occur when a person's internal biological clock is normally delayed or advanced from the external environment.
People with an Advanced Sleep Phase Syndrome, who tend to be older, become tired in the late afternoon or early evening and wake in the early morning.
People with delayed or advanced sleep phase syndromes would be well advised to consult with a qualified sleep therapist before embarking on a program of light therapy.

 Sleep Wake Center
Advanced Sleep Phase Syndrome is called a circadian rhythm condition because the daily rhythm of sleep and wake occur at an advanced (earlier) time of day.
This type of sleep and activity pattern seems to be genetic in most cases and can be obvious to the parents even when their child is still quite young.
Other sleep genes that are transmitted to offspring are known to cause FASPS in laboratory animals.

Advanced Sleep Phase of Aging is a profound problem for the elderly population.
In fact, one third of the population over 65 years of age experience a change in their sleep cycle when they fall asleep at earlier and earlier times and then wake up early in the morning.
If your sleep patterns appear to match the sleep patterns currently under study, you may be asked to fill out additional questionnaires, submit additional information including medical records and/or test results and, in some cases, to come to the University of California, San Francisco for additional studies.

Familial advanced sleep-phase syndrome (FASPS): An inherited abnormal sleep pattern in which the individual is a "morning lark" and consistently goes to sleep very early and is very early to rise.
FASPS is inherited as a highly penetrant autosomal dominant trait, meaning males and females alike can have it and they run a 50-50 chance of passing it on to each of their children.

Steve Parker - Articles/Others/Su-Laine   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
It is thought that DSPS is caused by an insufficient ability to reset the sleep/wake cycle in response to environmental time cues - perhaps the biological clocks of DSP individuals have an unusually long cycle, or perhaps they are not sensitive enough to time cues.
There is an advanced sleep phase syndrome, which causes difficulty staying awake in the evening and staying asleep in the morning.
Because DSPS was discovered only in 1981, and there is little awareness of the disorder, it is difficult to get a reliable estimate of how widespread DSPS is. About 7% of adolescents have DSPS, and it is probably responsible for 7 -10% of cases of chronic insomnia.

HHMI News: First Human Circadian Rhythm Gene Identified
Researchers exploring the genetic basis of a rare syndrome that causes people to fall asleep and awaken earlier than normal have pinpointed the first human gene that controls circadian rhythm.
"While advanced sleep-phase syndrome is common among the elderly—who tend to fall asleep and wake earlier as they age—a familial syndrome was not even identified until 1999," said Ptacek, who is at the University of Utah.
According to Ptacek, individual members of the Utah family identified by Jones showed strong symptoms of a distinctive ASPS-type sleep pattern—as revealed by their answers to a questionnaire that covered sleep habits and time-preferences for activities such as test-taking and exercise.

Researchers studying three families with the same unusual sleep pattern have uncovered the first hereditary sleep disorder in humans caused by a single gene.

The most notable was a consistent advance of sleep onset and the first incidence of dream sleep by more than three hours.

For some, the lifestyle that comes with this pattern is not troublesome, but for others, trying to fit their sleep style into a “regular” pattern is a cause of considerable stress and frustration.
Once the sleep schedule has been changed to a more typical evening-to-bed, morning-to-rise schedule (often by advancing the to-bed time over several days), morning light therapy can be used to entrain the new schedule through morning melatonin suppression.
It was not until more “advanced” times, particularly with more and more artificial light and artificial stimulation, that we as a species had to adapt to a later sleep-wake pattern.

We postulate that affected individuals in this branch of the family are phenocopies and that they represent examples of the difficulties inherent in mapping genes based on self-reported behavior.
Inferring circadian phenotype from history alone (i.e., without measuring physiologic circadian phase markers in a controlled light-dark cycle or an endogenous period length in a time isolation facility) is difficult except in extreme cases.
