  Advanced Squad Leader
Advanced Squad Leader was released in the late 1980s as an upgrade to the original Squad Leader game system put forth in 1977 by The Avalon Hill Game Company.
Advanced Squad Leader became a game system flexible enough to simulate company and battalion level combat occuring in any theatre of the Second World War, and could simulate the characteristics, weapons, and tactics of any of the world's armies.

  Squad Leader - www.canadiansoldiers.com
Squads are considered to be at full strength until destroyed, and vehicles suffer no damage aside from weapons malfunctions or immobilizations; partial penetrations, panicked crews, and other battlefield phenomena are ignored in Squad Leader.
Even before Squad Leader debuted, plans were being made to expand the initial release; these expansions would be called "gamettes" and concentrate on particular eras or theatres, all the while developing the basic game system with additional rules, new weapons types, and different terrain.
Squad Leader alone had 520 1/2-inch counters and 192 5/8-inch counters rendered obsolete by the new system (in fact, many had already been made obsolete by the time GI was introduced).

ASL Modules provide the standard equipment for playing ASL, including mapboards divided into hexagons to regulate fire and movement, using generic terrain that can stand in for any historical location, and cardboard pieces (called "counters") depicting squads of soldiers, weapons teams, individual leaders, support weapons, heavy weapons, and vehicles.
ASL came down firmly on the side of "legalese", though not coincidentally Don Greenwood was the driving force behind ASL with John Hill having moved on to other projects after the original Squad Leader.
Squad Leader Conversions were lettered A-W, with the first scenarios appearing in Volume 22, Number 6 and the last in Volume 32 Number 3.

The latest trend among Squad Leader fanatics (in common slang, referred to variously as "losers", "nancy boys", or "Plano children" (after the storage compartments they keep the 25 million counters in)) is to argue the relative statistical adherence of regular dice, "precision dice", and Popamatic Trouble.
Among Squad Leader players, precision dice are shown to return an average of seven (the likeliest result of rolling two six-sided dice and adding the numbers together) 0.014 times more often per 1000 rolls than regular dice.
The "1" in the box refers to the number of execrable computer adaptations of this game (see Microprose's Avalon Hill's Squad Leader), with 2/4/6 in the lower right hand corner representing the approximate amounts of juice/soda/beer one will consume during play of a scenario with one of these counters (and accompanying rules) in it.

Advanced Squad Leader is the completely reorganized and redesigned version of the original Squad Leader system.
While ASL is 'advanced', it actually is a simpler game than the original Squad Leader became after the first gamette.
And ASL is more than 'squads' - the system includes the rules for everything from machine guns to bazookas, tanks and ordinance weapons, paratrooper drops, glider landings and beach assaults.

Squad Leader and its latest incarnation, Advanced Squad Leader, are probably the most popular board wargames of all time, with a legion of fanatically dedicated fans (including its most famous one, Curt Shilling of the Arizona Diamondbacks).
Squad Leader also tries to add some personality to your soldiers by giving a brief biography of each, but these come off as sort of caricatured.
Indeed, one of the problems with Squad Leader is it never seems to settle on whether it wants to be a serious wargame about World War II or a Hollywood movie about World War II.

I have been playing ASL since it was just SL and I know the rules fairly well (at least I know where to look for a rule), and I am of the belief that ASL can be a pretty good simulation of small unit combat.
I like the feel of reality (realizm to some) that ASL achieves with this tool in place...now you never know if you are going to be able to move the troops you need each turn.
You are forced to keep leaders near the troops to keep the impetus of the advance going...stragglers get left behind because you don't want to "waste" that Move card to bring up that one slow-poke squad.
