Squad Leader - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Squad Leader is a tactical level board wargame originally published by Avalon Hill in 1977.
The mounted mapboards (both in Squad Leader and its offspring) were a hallmark of Avalon Hill, and continued right through to the introduction of the ASL Starter Kits by Multi-Man Publishing in 2004 (which featured mapboards printed on inexpensive cardboard stock).
Squads are considered to be at full strength until destroyed, and vehicles suffer no damage aside from weapons malfunctions or immobilizations; partial penetrations, panicked crews, and other battlefield phenomena are ignored in Squad Leader.

Info and facts on 'Advanced Squad Leader'   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Between the ASL starter kit (12 page-rulebook) and a complete set (14 boxed modules) is a wide range of possibilities covering every theater, period and nationality of the war.
The game was originally published by Avalon Hill (additional info and facts about Avalon Hill) in 1985 as a successor to the award-winning Squad Leader (additional info and facts about Squad Leader) series whose supplements/sequels had made the system difficult to play by introducing numerous rules that often 'overwrote' parts of previous rules.
As the first of Avalon Hill's 'advanced' games (the others were Advanced Civilization and Advanced Third Reich (additional info and facts about Advanced Third Reich)) it used the same boards as as Squad Leader, and rules with similar concepts, but was otherwise effectively a new game.

 So What is ASL Anyway?
Advanced Squad Leader, or simply ASL for short, is a tactical wargaming system capable of simulating almost any small unit action from the Second World War.
Although Squad Leader was a great game in its own right, and was quite a success for its publisher Avalon Hill, there were many players who wanted to see the system continue to evolve into something more refined and detailed.
Advanced Squad Leader is now in its second edition and still continues to expand and evolve.

Advanced Squad Leader (ASL) is a game system representing many things to many players.
These are similar to previous Historical ASL (HASL) modules in that they depict a particular situation or battle such as Stalingrad in Red Barricades or the Stoutmont in Kampfgruppe Peiper.
Although the hex size is standard among most ASL historical modules, players used to the Red Barricades (the venerable ASL Stalingrad module) map will need to adjust to the slightly smaller size.

My first few tries at playing some of the Starter Kit scenarios were filled with mistakes, much referencing of the rules, and a sense of the absurd, as turns that were supposed to represent two minutes took up to half an hour or more to play.
The company is taking preorders for ASL Starter KIt # 2, which will introduce artillery pieces and rules, and I assume there will be additional modules down the road that will cover armor and other special units and rules.
My guess is that ASL veterans can enjoy these scenarios as relatively quick, exciting diversions from playing the full-blown version of the game.
