Topic: Adventitia

  Histology of the Blood Vessels
The adventitia is the thickest layer in large veins and is made of collagen fibres, some elastic fibres and fibroblasts.
The adventitia is not distinct in any of the vessels, and blends in with the little bit of yellowish collagenous CT through which they are running.
The adventitia of the vessels blends in with the surrounding CT. An adventitia is most distinct along the top left of the vein, where it borders on adipose cells.

Larger vessels are therefore accompanied by smaller blood vessels which supply the tunica adventitia and, in the largest vessels, the outer part of the tunica media of the vessel wall.
It is difficult to identify an external elastic lamina or to distinguish the tunica adventitia from the connective tissue surrounding the vessel.
The transition from the tunica adventitia to the surrounding connective tissue is gradual.

The media and the adventitia are significantly affected by atherosclerosis, although traditionally it has been primarily thought of as a disease of the intima that may lead to rupture of a plaque that is not very stenotic on angiography.
Importantly, the reaction of the adventitia and the media to the deposition of cholesterol in the intima probably has significant implications in terms of the final outcome of an artery leading to an acute coronary syndrome (ACS).
The presence of a significant fibrotic phenomenon arising from the adventitia with the vasavasorum penetrating the artery at the site of the injury was shown with autopsy data from patients who died from coronary disease and had a recent angioplasty.

However, if the adventitia plays an active role on arterial wall biomechanical behaviour and functions remains to be established.
Arterial wall viscosity and elasticity were influenced by adventitia removal in in vivo studies, possibly by a smooth muscle-dependent mechanism, since it was not present in in vitro experiments.
Adventitia would be involved in a physiological mechanism of arterial wall viscous and elastic properties regulation, that could influence arterial buffering and conduit functions.

The adventitia consists of loose connective tissue with thick bundles of longitudinally oriented collagen and elastic fibers.
Another is that the fibers of the adventitia are oriented predominantly along the axis of the artery instead of randomly.
There should be a discernible adventitia, although the outer extent of that layer may be indistinct (illustration).

The tunica adventitia, the outermost layer, consists chiefly of type 1 collagen and elastic fibers that anchor the vessel in the surrounding tissues.
In veins, the adventitia is the thickest layer; in large veins, it may contain longitudinal bundles of smooth muscle.
The outer layer of the heart (cpicardiurn) is not an adventitia, but rather a serosa, composed of connective tissue covered on its outer surface by a mesothelium.

Adventitia definition - Medical Dictionary definitions of popular medical terms
Adventitia: The outermost connective tissue covering of any organ, vessel, or other structure.
For example, the connective tissue that surrounds an artery is called the adventitia because it is considered extraneous to the artery.
A related term is "adventititious" meaning "coming from an external source or occurring in an unusual place or manner." When a doctor or nurse listens to the chest or abdomen, adventitious sounds are those that are normally not heard coming from the chest or abdomen.
