The goal was to create an adventure game editor which would alow people to make their own adventure games without programming.
Some of the AGS games are arguably better than others, and AGDI's remakes of King's Quest 1 and 2 (they're currently working on Quest for Glory 2) are probably some of the better ones made with AGS.
To answer your question, there are many adventure games being made today, but yes, most of them are independent and typically freeware.

This is a marvelous, vastly entertaining romp under the guise of an "old school" adventure game.

What we have here is a traditional point and click adventure, and a well executed one it is. However, what I really liked about this game was the surreal, slightly warped humour that came from both the characters and dialogue, along with the fact that this is a game with a heart.
The game is of course freeware but I really do ask that if you play the game and enjoy it, you email the author (address on his website mentioned below).
It's not uncommon (I don't think I've ever seen a freeware adventure game that ever pulled that off decently), but it was just hard to look at him when he was walking down or up ramps, always twitching.

The game also includes nightmare levels where you play the alternative dark conditions of the real places like Silent Hill series.
For example, you will play the hotel level when it's dark and the walls are rusted (the demo's puzzles won't be too hard as the demo takes place in the 2nd level of Lost In The Nightmare).

Since this game is written using Adventure Game Studio, and a version of the Adventure Game Studio runtime exists for linux, is there any chance we'll see a linux version of The Shivah?
One feature of the user interface, which is not at all obvious but must be exploited to complete the game, left me stuck about halfway through: You can combine clues you have gathered into new clues by dragging and dropping.
It's certainly refreshing to see an adventure game that makes ethnicity and religion a central component of the story.

Sure, the graphics are simple, but you have to understand that I'm reviewing a free adventure game, created by a sum total of one person (with the help of a few invaluable testers).
It is fun to try to find all of the references in the game to pop culture, TV, movies, books, etc. For example, the painting in your hotel room is similar to the one found in the living room in The Simpsons.
