  Advertising Standards Authority
The ASA is holding a seminar on violence in advertising at the Nottingham Park Plaza on Wednesday 21 November.  With rising public concern about violence and anti-social behaviour, this timely seminar will bring together the ASA’s senior executives with delegates who have a personal or professional concern about the use of violent imagery in advertising.
In response to this the Advertising Standards Authority wants the public to be assured that new gambling advertising rules will come into effect at the same time in order to protect consumers.
The ASA is raising consumer awareness of misleading ads, reminding advertisers of the rules and why it is not always easy being green.

Lost-and-found advertising on papyrus was common in Greece and Rome.
Today, advertising is evolving even further, with "guerrilla" promotions that involve unusual approaches such as staged encounters in public places, giveaways of products such as cars that are covered with brand messages, and interactive advertising where the viewer can respond to become part of the advertising message.
Some examples are the ban on television tobacco advertising imposed in many countries, and the total ban on advertising to children under twelve imposed by the Swedish government in 1991.

Classified advertising is a form of advertising which is particularly common in newspapers and other periodicals.
Classified advertising is usually textually based and can consist of as little as the type of item being sold, (i.e., "Clothing") and a telephone number to call for more information ("call 555-777x").
In recent years the term "classified advertising" has expanded from merely the sense of print advertisements in periodicals to include similar types of advertising on computer services, radio, and even television, particularly cable television but occasionally broadcast television as well, typically very early in the morning hours.

Advertising, by George Bittlingmayer: The Concise Encyclopedia of Economics: Library of Economics and Liberty
This is because it is easier to understand why advertising is used in some circumstances and not in others by looking at the problems firms face in promoting their wares, rather than by focusing on advertising as an isolated phenomenon.
While advertising has its roots in the advance of literacy and the advent of inexpensive mass newspapers in the nineteenth century, modern advertising as we know it began at the turn of the century with two new products, Kellogg cereals and Camel cigarettes.
Advertising messages obviously can be used to mislead, but a heavily advertised brand name also limits the scope for deception and poor quality.
