Advice columnist Ann Landers -- whose real name was Esther Pauline Lederer -- was recalled Sunday as a well-read woman with "her thumb on everything" who refused treatment for the cancer that killed her.
Chicago Sun-Times columnist and friend Michael Sneed said Lederer chose not to have treatment for her illness and didn't publicize it beyond her family and close friends.
Esther 'Eppie' Lederer, known to newspaper readers as advice columnist Ann Landers, has died at age 83.

February 20, 2006 - Marguerite Kelly, an advice columnist for the Washington Post recently published a letter from parents whose son has just told them he thinks he's gay.
Kelly says that junior or senior high girls will decide they're lesbians for a semester and then change their minds "when the fad goes away." She also says that some "adults change from heterosexual to bisexual to homosexual and back again over a 30-to-40-year period.
The columnist advises the parents to accept their son's homosexuality and to seek a counselor who is "kind and experienced in this field." She also urges the parents to contact the National Youth Advocacy Coalition, Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays and recommends several gay-affirmative books for them to read.

As well, almost every piece of advice ended with the dreaded "seek psychiatric counseling." Did she get a commission from head shrinks or something?
I imagine that the rest of America is about like me. When I read her column, I was certainly capable of recognizing poor advice or some of her more liberal-based answers.
