In the army the administration of justice as pertaining to discipline is carried out in accordance with the provisions of military law, and it is the function of the judge-advocate-general to ensure that these disciplinary powers are exercised in strict conformity with that law.
The appointment is conferred by letters-patent, which define the exact functions attaching to the office, which practically are the reviewing of the proceedings of all field-general, general and district courts-martial held in the United Kingdom, and advising the sovereign as to the confirmation of the finding and sentence.
All general courtsmartial held in the United Kingdom are sent to the judgeadvocate-general, to be by him submitted to the sovereign for confirmation; and all district courts-martial, after having been confirmed and promulgated, are sent to his office for examination and custody.

Her Majesty's Advocate General for Scotland is one of the Law Officers of the Crown, whose duty is to advise the Crown and Government on the law.
The office of Advocate General for Scotland was created in 1999 by the Scotland Act 1998 to be the chief legal adviser to the United Kingdom Government on Scots Law, replacing the Lord Advocate and Solicitor General for Scotland, who were transferred to the Scottish Executive.
The office of "Her Majesty's Advocate General for Scotland" should not be confused with that of "Her Majesty's Advocate", which is another name for the Lord Advocate.

The attorney general is appointed by justices of the Tennessee Supreme Court for an eight-year term.

Despite a long record of service by Army judge advocates, it was not until the beginning of World War II that efforts were made to provide our attorneys with specialized legal education.
In February 1942, as uniformed lawyers' responsibilities increased in volume and complexity, specialized continuing legal education courses for active duty judge advocates were begun in Washington, D.C. In August 1942, the School moved from the National University Law School in Washington, D.C., to the University of Michigan Law School in Ann Arbor.
Detailed instruction was needed for new judge advocates and continuning instruction on new developments in military law was required for all judge advocates.
