The Adyar River, originating from the Chembarambakkam Lake (Chengalpattu district), is one of the rivers which passes through Chennai, South India, and joins the Bay of Bengal.
The Adyar River contributes to the estuarine ecosystem of Chennai.
Most of the wastes of the city is drained into this river and Cooum river.

 The Hindu : Chromium detected in Adyar river
The detection of chromium in the Adyar river near Anakaputhur on the city outskirts has alarmed pollution watchdogs as much as it has pointed out a drawback in the system of common effluent treatment plants for tanneries.
This element was found in the surface water of the river when a sample was analysed at the Water Testing Laboratory of the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board in April.
Faced by public pressure due to continuous pollution of the Adyar river and groundwater contamination, the Executive Officer of the Anakaputhur Town Panchayat took three samples of groundwater in and around the panchayat area and a sample from the surface water and sent them to the TWAD Board lab.

The headquarters of the Theosophical Society at Adyar are situated in a charming locale from where a path passing through a coconut grove leads to the sea across a wide stretch of sandy beach where the Adyar river pours into the Bay of Bengal.
Annie Besant became President in 1907, members of the Society were encouraged to build themselves houses and live in them whenever they visited Adyar, on the understanding that in their absence, she could dispose of the accommodation as she chose, and that on their deaths, the buildings became the property of the Society.

Even as the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority is close to taking a decision on the appointment of a consultant for the Thiruneermalai multi-purpose reservoir scheme, a prominent city-based NGO has written to the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, to execute a project on harnessing Adyar river water.
The location of Thiruneermalai holds significance because it is where the drainage courses of Guudvancheri, Padappai, Manimangalam and Somangalam join Adyar and it accounts for 80 per cent of the total catchment of 800 sq km.
In his communication, Mr Nirmal stated that the Adyar river was being polluted by the outfall of sewage from panchayats and residential colonies situated along its course.
