The head of the adze is oriented to the haft like a hoe, or plane, and not like an axe, whose cutting blade would be perpendicular to the blade of an adze.
In central Europe, adzes made by knapping (A hard kind of stone; a form of silica more opaque than chalcedony) flint are known from the late (Middle part of the Stone Age beginning about 15,000 years ago) Mesolithic onwards ("Scheibenbeile").
Adzes were also made and used by prehistoric southeast Asian cultures, especially in the (An Asian river; flows through a large delta in southern Vietnam into the South China Sea) Mekong River basin.

Used for anything from heavy stock removal to fitting and shaping, the adze, in one form or another, was standard equipment in almost every woodworking trade in the 1800s.
Though coopers used heavier hammers for riveting hoops and driving them on, the adze's hammer head came in handy for many tasks where a heavier hammer would have been overkill, particularly in repairing barrels.

 Rock Climbing.com View topic - Adze filing...why???...how???
I don’t usually use the Adz on my Rages but I heard that some climbers file the adze for various reasons (that I don’t know)…can u tell how is it done and why…I just don’t see it
I filed the shop corners off my adzes on my technical axes so when I do take an adze to the face it does a little more or less damage depending on if sharp pointy would have meant a cleaner cut then the blunt edge I filed down to.
Either way you definitely will remember the adze is pretty dangerous when a tool pops in your face.
