The first line of defense against some of Pyongyang’s missiles likely would be the Navy’s sea-based missile defense system, which in recent years has compiled a nearly perfect test record.
Hostile missiles in the terminal phase of attack would be left to two antimissile systems, the Patriot Advanced Capability-3 and the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system.
Today’s Ballistic Missile Defense System is the latest evolution of late President Ronald Reagan’s dream of breaking away from the concept of mutually assured destruction that had been a keystone of U.S. national security policy for almost four decades.

The Aegis system was involved in an incident in which USS Vincennes mistakenly shot down Iran Air Flight 655 in 1988 resulting in 290 civilian fatalities.
The Aegis system correctly identified and reported flight 665's civilian IFF (identification friend or foe) number, and that it was only flying at 385 knots airspeed; however the crew of the Vincennes misinterpreted this information.

After the boost-stage ballistic missiles follow a trajectory mainly determined by ballistics, the guidance is for relatively small deviations from that.
The accuracy of these systems was fairly poor, but post-war development by most military forces improved the basic inertial platform concept to the point where it could be used as the guidance system on ICBMs flying thousands of miles.
Today the ballistic missile represents the only strategic deterrent in most military forces; the USAFs continued support of manned bombers is considered by most to be entirely political in nature.

On Missile Defense, Pentagon Keeps the Cart in Front of the Horse
The mock warhead in the test remained attached to the much larger missile body of the target missile, rather than separating from the missile, as one would expect in a real attack by missiles of this range.
In essence, the missile body acted as a large radar beacon attached to the warhead, since it gives a large radar reflection and makes tracking the target by the missile defense radar (the SPY radar on the Aegis cruiser) much easier.
The Pentagon does not plan a realistic test using a mock warhead that separates from the missile body until late 2005, which is after the planned deployment date of mid-2005 for this system.
