As a human being, I am tempted to say that Aegnor made the wrong choice, that he didn't fully appreciate the fleetingness of human life.
I can certainly imagine that Aegnor _did_ think long and hard about the situation before he decided to wait, and that his totally different perspective on life simply brought him to a different conclusion.
In the end, looking back on it, he might well have said that his death in the Dagor Bragollach (before Andreth died, I seem to recall) and his preoccupation with the long siege before it showed that his choice was the right one.
