“Aegukga,” which means “the love song for the country” in Korean, was composed in 1935 by the late composer Ahn Eak Tai and was adopted as the national anthem in 1948, three years after the country was liberated from Japanese colonial rule.

Records show that a Western-style military band was formed during the time of the Dae-han Empire (1897-1910) and that the "Dae-han Empire Aegukga" was composed in 1902 and played at important national functions.
The original words of Aegukga appeared in a written form around 1907 to inculcate allegiance to the nation and foster the spirit of independence as the country faced threats of foreign annexation.
Over the years, the lyrics have gone through several versions until they were adopted as the national anthem in the present form in 1948.

I was in the midst of remaking our Malaysian anthem in the key of Rock when I read 'THIS'.
SK Telecom managed to ruffle some feathers in Korea recently when they screened a TV commercial containing the rock remake of the Korean national anthem ~ Aegukga (愛國歌/애국가).
I wonder if shit is going to hit the fan now if they pursue the matter.

The Yoon Do-hyun Band, best known for their rock rendition of the famous Korean folk song “Arirang” has managed to stir up a wasps' nest of disapproval with their latest rock redo.
Apparently, their personal spin on the Korean national anthem, “Aegukga,” isn’t appreciated by some patriots who complained after the new song appeared in an SK Telecom commercial, alongside images of cheering fans from the 2002 World Cup.
Some didn’t like the anthem being used for commercial purposes and some didn’t care for the more upbeat and irreverent styling, but some fans were supportive of the changes.

The Korean government is apparently in the process of negotiating for the copyright of Aegukga.
I was unsure from the articles who the Ahn family will be giving the copyright to (I assume it's to the government), and if they are giving, or selling it.
