Aelfwynn - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Aelfwynn (Ælfwynn, Elfwina) of Mercia, was the only daughter of Earl Aethelred of Mercia and his wife and successor Ethelfleda.
Edward appears to have taken notice of this as he gave Mercia to his son Athelstan at his death.
She should not be confused with Aelfwynn, wife of Athelstan Half-King.

Aelfwynn soon fell deeply in love with the king, and so it never occurred to her that here might well be a queen some where who would not smile upon the attention the king paid her.
Aelfwynn never once suspected that there was a queen, let alone that she was suffering for Aelfwynn’s joy.
Unable to bear being apart from her, the king brought Aelfwynn into his kingdom to live, and together they were greatly happy, though Aelfwynn was soon to learn the awful truth about the true Queen, who had Aelfwynn watched like a hawk and soon discovered the shocking news of the marriage.

 United Kindom Substates
She was joint lady of the Mercians along with her young daughter Aelfwynn, who was later deposed by King Edward the Elder, Æthelflæd's brother.
Chroniclers have noticed the right of Aelfwynn so precisely as to leave no doubt concerning her claim; and this fact is of considerable value in showing that, contrary to the practice of other Teutonic nations, the sovereign authority amongst the Anglo-Saxons might descend to a female.
But her uncle, King Edward of Wessex, occupied the town and received the submission of the Mercians, and in December of the same year, he deprived her "of all authority among the Mercians" and took her away to Wessex, where she seems to have spend the rest of her life in a nunnery.

Aelfwynn is a Saxon name which means "elf-friend." I think that fits me perfectly, especially since I have loved the fair folk since I was a child.
I began writing about her in middle school, long before I found out that Aelfwynn (and its alternate spelling, Elfwynn) are real names.
