Aelred is the patron saint of Integrity, an organization in the Episcopal Church in the United States of America composed of gays and lesbians and their friends.

AELRED, AILRED, ETHELRED (1100-1166), English theologian, historical writer and abbot of Rievaulx, was born at Hexham about the year 1109.
In his youth he was at the court of Scotland as an attendant of Henry, son of David I. He was in high favour with that sovereign, but renounced the prospect of a bishopric to enter the Cistercian house of Rievaulx in Yorkshire, which was founded in 1131 by Walter Espec.
Here AElred remained for some time as master of the novices, but between the years 1142 and 1146 was elected abbot of Revesby in Lincolnshire and migrated thither.

The church founded by St. Wilfrid at Hexham became an episcopal see, and Alcmund, succeeding as bishop, in 767, led a life of remarkable piety until his death, 7 September, 781.
Alured obeyed and, having discovered and exhumed the Saint's remains, stole one of the bones to take back with him to Durham, but it was found that the shrine could not be moved by any strength of man until the bone was restored.
In 1154, the church having again been laid waste, the building was restored, and the bones of the Hexham saints, those of Alcmund among the rest, were gathered into one shrine.

To be fair to ++Rowan he hasn't been able to speak out before now while a judicial process has been underway, and we don't know anything about his actions or the way he has tried to influence things behind-the-scenes.
Meanwhile, regards to Prior Aelred on this feastday of Aelred of Hexham, Abbot of Rievaulx, whose seminal writings on Christian friendship have more to contribute to current debate than is often recognised.
