An aeolipile is a device consisting of an air-tight chamber (usually a sphere or cylinder) with bent or curved pipes projecting from it, through which steam is expelled.
The aeolipile, invented in the first century by Hero of Alexandria, is considered to be the first recorded steam engine.

The aeolipile, invented in the first century by Heron of Alexandria, is considered to be the first recorded steam engine.
The aeolipile, both at the time it was originally built and when I reconstructed it, is designed based on a variety of scientific laws and principles.
The aeolipile demonstrates this by ejecting steam under pressure from the nozzles, which causes the sphere, or turbine, to spin.

The name aeolipile was derived from the Latin "aeoli pila," which means "ball (or cap) of the god Aeolus".
In this type of turbine, the nozzles are mounted on and, consequently, revolve with the rotor.
The aeolipile is a single-stage turbine, but later American and English designs were multiple stage ones, with several bladed rotors connected to a single shaft and each stage becoming progressively larger.

The aeolipile was a hollow sphere mounted so that it could turn on a pair of hollow tubes that provided steam to the sphere from a pot of boiling water.
The steam escaped from the sphere from one or more bent tubes projecting from its equator, causing the sphere to revolve.
The aeolipile is the first known device to transform steam into rotary motion.

Heron did not consider this invention being useful for everyday applications: he considered his aeolipile invention as a novelty, a remarkable toy.

The aeolipile was a hollow sphere mounted so that it could turn on a pair of hollow tubes that provided steam to the sphere from a cauldron.
Like many other machines of the time that demonstrated basic mechanical principles, it was simply regarded as a curiosity or a toy and was not used for any practical purpose.
