Aerial Lift Bridge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Aerial Lift Bridge (earlier known as the Aerial Bridge or Aerial Ferry Bridge) is a major landmark in the port city of Duluth, Minnesota.
Duluth's bridge was inspired by the one in France, though the actual construction is quite different.
When it was completed in 1905, the Aerial Bridge's gondola had a capacity of 60 short tons (54 tonne) and could carry 350 people plus wagons, streetcars, or automobiles.

Architecture of the Aerial Lift Bridge - Duluth, Minnesota, United States of America
Because of urbanization on both sides of the channel, a traditional bridge was not possible as the approaches would have needed to be extremely long, reducing the utility of the structure.
This type of bridge has the same steel arch as a lift bridge, but instead of having a stable road surface moving up and down, it has a smaller platform that slides from one bank to the other suspended by a latticework of steel trusses.
Aerial transfer bridges are exceedingly rare in North America, though not entirely unheard of in Europe.

It consisted of the new four-lane, double-leaf bascule (draw) bridge and a freeway beginning at the northern end of the 1953 bypass (at present-day M-13), crossing the bridge and continuing northerly toward Bay City.
The final bridge design selected and constructed is a post-tensioned, segmental, box girder bridge and work on the new structure commenced in late-1979 and was projected to cost approximately $77 million (not counting approaches and ramp work).
In May of 1987, the Michigan Department of Transportation issued a report detailing the background of the Zilwaukee Bridge, the details on the accident and the attendant repairs as well as a discussion of the safety of the bridge, which was a major concern with the public at the time.

 Duluth's Area Lift Bridge
The Aerial Lift Bridge, one of the most popular tourist attractions in Minnesota, was constructed in 1904-1905 as the Aerial Ferry Bridge.
The original Aerial Ferry Bridge consisted of much of today's structure but, instead of the lift span, a suspended car, or gondola, ferried people and vehicles on a one-minute trip across the canal.
At that time, the bridge operators moved from running the gondola to working in the control house in the center of the span.

National Register of Historic Places - Aerial Lift Bridge
Although originally designed and currently configured as a vertical lift bridge, the Aerial Lift Bridge in Duluth began life as an aerial transfer bridge, an extremely rare type inspired by the only other such structure in the world – a suspended car bridge at Rouen, France.
The need for a bridge here first arose in 1871, when Duluth residents dug through the narrow slit of land known as Minnesota Point to create a harbor at the head of the Great Lakes.
In 1929 the bridge was modified to accommodate a growing population on the Point and increasing tourist traffic.
