Aert [Aernout] van der Neer was probably born in Amsterdam.
Van der Neer spent his youth near Gorinchem in the south of the Netherlands, where he most likely trained with the landscape painter Rafel Govertsz.
Because Van der Neer did not receive high prices for his pictures, he was forced to supplement his income as the proprietor of an Amsterdam tavern, "de Graeff van Hollant," in 1659.

Van der Neer probably did not begin his painting career until after 1630 and then was unable to make a reasonable living from his art.
The forces are named for the Dutch physicist Johannes van der Waals, who in 1873 first postulated these intermolecular forces in developing a theory to account for the properties of real gases.
Van der Waals received the Nobel prize in physics in 1910 for his research on the gaseous and liquid states of matter in which he developed a formula for the continuity of all gases, the van der Waals equation.

Although generally known by the name of Aert, he usually signed himself Aernout.
According to Houbraken, van der Neer spent his youth in Arkel near Gorinchem (Gorkum), a town on the river Waal, east of Dordrecht, where he worked as a majoor (steward) for the lords of Arkel.
Around 1632 van der Neer and his wife moved to Amsterdam where, in about 1634, their eldest son, (2) Eglon, was born.

For Fishing by Moonlight, Robin Milford drew inspiration from the Dutch artist, Aernout van der Neer’s (1603-1677) nocturnal picture of the same title showing fishing boats in a river estuary, nets drying in the foreground, and a village church in the background.
Apart from being the most immediately appealing piece in this compilation it also has the strongest melodic lines.
