Historically, Zambia has been served by a rail line running south to South Africa via Zimbabwe, and north through the Copperbelt to Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Lake is bordered by Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania and Burundi.
Zambia formerly had its own ocean-going shipping line which was dissolved, but there have been calls in recent years to re-establish it in view of potential cost savings.
