The second, and the one which is the purpose of this article, is the 80% (maximum aerobic training) heart rate: 156 for the Mark Allen method, 155 for the Actual Maximum heart rate method, and looking at the EnduranceCoach method, 155bpm where Moderate intensity ends and Hard intensity begins.
80%: the percentage that is the maximum aerobic training heart rate
believe a really important training heart rate is the maximum aerobic training heart rate.

 AskMen.com - aerobic exercises
Aerobic training and strength training are the yin and yang of the exercise world.
The biggest mistake guys make when trying to combine aerobic training with strength training is that they employ a progressive overload methodology to their aerobic training.
To be clear, aerobics implies low intensity, long duration exercise that is intended to expend calories and burn fat.

The Mid-Atlantic Monthly: THE SCIENCE OF SPEED
Most aerobic training is best performed at well below this threshold, as this may lead to ineffective training, or even peaking or burning out well in advance of the key race.
Most of your aerobic training will be performed from 65% HR max, or 120 bpm, up to 90% LT, or 145 bpm.
(Ah, but this will all be tackled in another article) For the moment training intensities or "zones" the coach considers are aerobic, lactate threshold, VO2 Max and anaerobic.

Aerobic threshold is the minimal training speed that contributes to the improvement in aerobic endurance.
Aerobic training enables the swimmer to achieve the fastest possible pace without experiencing the accumulation of lactic acid.
Aerobic Training is the foundation for the two other forms of training.

Like the High Aerobic Threshold level, you will do very little of this training in early season and increase during tapering to roughly 30% of your total yardage, combined with the previous level.
During this training zone, your body changes from aerobic training to anaerobic training.
General Aerobic swimming is also known as endurance base training.

This is the minimum intensity you should train at to acquire a training effect and any aerobic training below it is effectively a waste of time.
In heart rate literature this is typically “65-75% of maximum heart rate” or “when you get up a slight puff and start to sweat.” However, blood lactate sampling commonly reveals aerobic threshold is typically lower or higher than this, consequently using this estimation, many of us are training too slow or too hard.
Aerobic threshold occurs with a slight increase in blood lactate levels, while lactate threshold occurs with a large jump in blood lactate levels

Does this mean that one should forego aerobic training altogether?  There is no clear consensus among the experts, though many do advocate the developing of an "aerobic base" particularly in the preparatory period of training, as appropriate aerobic training can improve circulatory processes and facilitate recovery.
Aerobic training stresses the slow-twitch endurance muscle fibers, rather than the fast-twitch, speed/power fibers.
And then establish how much of that endurance is derived from aerobic metabolism, and how much from anaerobic metabolism.  For an intensive loading period of 3-5 minutes duration, roughly half of the energy is supplied by anaerobic metabolism and half from aerobic metabolism.

Understand these studies where adding inspiratory muscle training to their normal aerobic conditioning training program.
For example, by swimming, you would not be very effective in maintaining your VO2 for running since you would be training different muscles in a different fashion than you are when you are running.
Certainly inspiratory muscle training would not be a substitute to your normal cardio conditioning.

At this stage it is best to group different training variables like lactate threshold training, aerobic capacity training, speed and agility work in to single sessions.
Again if you are training simply for fitness and not competitive sport then you can keep a varied approach to aerobics, or choose to specialise on a favoured modality if you like.
For example rowing, jogging, cycling, steppers, cross machines, skipping, aerobics classes etc are all available in most gyms and at this stage you can use them all.

Aerobic training results in a substantial change in the cardiovascular responses to exercise.
Exercise in which aerobic metabolism accounts for most of the energy needs of active skeletal muscle cells is performed at the lower end of the scale (up to 30% of maximal power), where power output is relatively low and time to exhaustion is high.

 Speedwork - Non-Coach's Column April 2001
Training intended to improve aerobic speed generally takes the form of intervals, ranging from say 1 minute up to 5 minutes of fast running close to your threshold, with partial recovery between each effort.
Aerobic speed is certainly more important to distance runners because you obviously cannot run far in oxygen debt.
The key to all of these sessions is proper pacing - you need to aim to run close to your aerobic threshold (which means that you shouldn’t be able to talk comfortably!) at the fastest pace that you can reasonably hold for the entire set of efforts.

Exercise and Play To Manage Stress
A wise integration of aerobic conditioning, flexibility exercise, strength training, activities that build neuromuscular coordination, and play is at the heart of any true holistic lifestyle.
And the importance of balancing strength training with aerobic conditioning, flexibility exercises (At least 10 minutes of stretching before and after a strength training session is absolutely necessary), and coordination activities, is essential.
In holistic health terms aerobic fitness is related to a level of functioning that provides the highest level of benefits with the smallest amount of disadvantages consistent with a well-balanced lifestyle and supporting the individual's life goals.

 Anaerobic Threshold Exercise
People who utilize more aerobic, or MAF-training, can be assured of several positive results: They will not only develop both their aerobic and anaerobic systems but they will also be moving in a direction that promotes good health.
While most people should focus more on aerobic conditioning as a dominant part of an overall program, it's essential to examine the concept of anaerobic threshold exercise, sometimes called AT-training.
Because the physiological basis of AT training is extremely complex, those desiring more detailed information on this subject should consult the study "Determination of the anaerobic threshold by a non-evasive field test in runners," by Conconi et al, published by the American Physiological Society in 1982.

BetterU News - Issue #26 - Interval Training, 5 Unique Exercises, Mike Mentzer, Defective Repetitions
This is a unique form of interval training that I've been working with that basically combines Aerobic Interval Training with Maximal Interval Training to allow you to work at near-peak levels for long periods of time.
Aerobic Interval Training is very beneficial for rapidly improving your aerobic conditioning as well as burning fat.
Interval training can be performed on almost any cardiovascular machine (including the treadmill, stair machine, stationary bike, elliptical trainer, etc.) as well as almost any type of cardiovascular exercise (such as cycling, swimming, running, etc.).

Cardiac Rehabilitation and High-Intensity Interval Exercise Pritikin Center Lifetime Fitness
Interval training works both your aerobic and anaerobic systems, “and the benefits are amazing,” states Scott Danberg, MS, Director of Exercise at the Pritikin Longevity Center and Spa.
Scientists recently concluded that high-intensity intervals (one- to two-minute bouts of vigorous aerobic exercise at the high end of one’s target heart rate zone alternated with low-intensity bouts) were a safe alternative to traditional cardiac rehabilitation for people with coronary artery disease who are basically in good condition.
Moreover, interval training provided additional benefits, particularly stronger muscles, which, the authors reported, would be especially helpful for the performance of many activities of daily living, from carrying grocery bags to playing with children and grandchildren.*
