When I worked at Expo 86, I was always tickled that we managed to have one of Molt Taylor’s Aerocars on display in the Aviation Plaza.
I’ve always thought Taylor’s way of fulfilling the Popular Science predictions of the early 50s was brilliant, and I’ve always been disappointed that we haven’t figured out how to put one of these vehicles in everybody’s garage, or at least in mine.
The new Aerocar will use a sleek, waist-high, two-seat Lotus Elise for wheels and cockpit, and attach a wing and tail assembly with a separate engine and prop to carry it aloft.

In standard form, the rear-engine Elise weighs 1,556 pounds, but with the substitution of a much lighter Chevy Sprint engine and transmission, it now weighs just 1,430 pounds, including wing and strut fittings and a modified roll bar capable of handling 4.5 times the weight of the car.
The Sweeney Aerocar will have a flight module that attaches to the top of the car, as shown on the model displayed with the car at Oshkosh.
