The study of airmail is known as aerophilately.
Although carrier pigeons had long been used to send messages (an activity known as pigeon mail), the first mail to be carried by an air vehicle was on 7 January 1785, on a balloon flight from Dover to France near Calais.

It is a cover that was personally flown over the South Pole by Byrd during BAE I that he had subsequently serviced at Little America during the Byrd Antarctic Expedition II between 1933-35.
Having been a long term resident of the Canal Zone, and an expert on its aerophilately and philately, the Seller was challenged to prove otherwise.
The second piece of aerophilately to be associated with the First Byrd Antarctic Expedition occurred when Admiral Byrd was in the Panama Canal Zone, immediately after his return from Little America, during May 1930.

Ruso described the earliest attempts by man to fly and the gradual development of balloon flights.
Ruso certainly provided us with a great evening of entertainment and a good education on the early beginnings of aerophilately.
