  Aerophone - AudioLexic
An aerophone is any musical instrument which produces sound primarily by causing a body of air to vibrate, without the use of strings or membranes, and without the vibration of the instrument itself adding considerably to the sound.
It is one of the five main classes (class 4) of instruments in the original Hornbostel-Sachs scheme of musical instrument classification.
Hornbostel-Sachs divides aerophones by whether vibrating air is contained in the instrument itself or not.

Free aerophone   (Site not responding. Last check: )
An instrument classified as an aerophone but that produces sound by freely using air as the primary vibrating means.
As opposed to a normal aerophone where typically the performer's breath provides the air source as a column, free aerophones such as the bull-roarer, set the air into vibration by simply spinning the instrument through the air.
Thus, in free aerophones, the air is not confined to the instrument or to an air column within the instrument.

 Classifying Musical Instruments
In aerophones, the sound is produced by vibrating air (usually inside the instrument).
The instrument, or parts of the instrument, are shaped (often into a tube or set of tubes) so that the vibrations will be a particular length, and so a particular pitch (see Sound, Physics and Music.) Aerophones are grouped according to what causes the air to begin vibrating.
In membranophones, the sound begins with the vibration of a stretched membrane, or skin (often an actual animal skin), but the skin is usually stretched across a resonator.

It is advisable to analyze, using a complete methodology, all the aerophones of this family, stored in various museums, to enable the generation of their monographs and to make comparisons and correlation among them and their sounds.
