  Aeroplane - MSN Encarta
Aeroplane, heavier-than-air craft that is usually propelled mechanically and supported by the aerodynamic action of the airstream on fixed-wing surfaces.
As an aeroplane flies on a level course, the lift contributed by the wing and other parts of the structure counterbalances the weight of the plane.
Aeroplane designers conceive aircraft with the highest possible ratio of lift to drag, which occurs when the drag resulting from the shape is equal to the induced drag resulting from the lift.

The Aeroplane Speaks - CHAPTER II
First, imagine the aeroplane travelling in the direction of motion, which coincides with the direction of thrust T. The weight is, of course, balanced about a C.P., the resultant of the C.P. of the main surface and the C.P. of the stabilizing surface.
Aeroplanes have, in the past, been built with a stabilizing surface in front of the main surface instead of at the rear of it.
The aeroplane is then, as a glider, nose-heavy--and the distance the C.G. is placed in advance of the C.L. should be such as to ensure a gliding angle producing a velocity the same as the normal flying speed (for which the strength of construction has been designed).

 Aeroplane - MSN Encarta
An aeroplane about to break the sound barrier is on the verge of catching up with the pressure waves created by its own forward motion.
The resulting distortion of the airflow at Mach 1 causes the formation of a shock wave, known as the compressibility shock, which greatly increases the drag of the plane.
The present-day conventional aeroplane may be divided into four components: fuselage, wings, tail assembly, and landing gear, or undercarriage.

 A New Aeroplane
It is built on the aeroplane principle, that is, it has no gasbag or balloon to support it, but is supported in air only when in motion, and by the upward reaction of the air upon the underside of thin fixed surfaces or aeroplanes, which are slightly inclined to the line of motion.
The upper rear aeroplane is rectangular in shape, and 21 feet by 6 1/2 feet in width and depth.
The edges of the diedral angle aeroplanes not extending to the edges of the two upper aeroplanes, a further improvement in the stability is gained by leaving the same yielding and elastic under pressure.

Torque: The moment of the aerodynamic forces about the thrust line of a propeller which tends to turn the aeroplane in the opposite direction to that in which the propeller is rotating.
Aeroplanes with Townend rings were the Vickers Wellesley, the Westland Wallace and the Gloster Gauntlet.
A tractor propeller is usually fitted in the nose or in the front of engine nacelles in the wings and is distinct from a pusher propeller which propels the aeroplane and is thus situated in the rear.

Suspended momentarily in the air, some of the nuts were near enough to the bolts to respond to an inherent attraction, and screwed themselves together, capturing between them another component in the process, and so were selected for the developing aeroplane.
There were far more parts than those required for one aeroplane, but those which were fortunate enough to fall into a viable position made up a complete airliner and drifted back to the earth's surface to make a safe landing.

The Policy Letter allows for the operation of aeroplanes that are similar in design and performance to ultra-light aeroplanes and allows for the carriage of another person if that person holds a pilot document that affords them the privilege to fly an ultra-light aeroplane in Canada.
Where the aircraft is an advanced ultra-light aeroplane, allowing two pilots to fly together is viewed as an acceptable risk given the aircraft is acceptable for passenger carriage and either individual is considered qualified to fly the aircraft.
In the case of a basic ultra-light aeroplane, although the aircraft is not fully acceptable for passenger carriage, the second person, who is a pilot, is deemed to be aware of the risks associated with flying in this category of aircraft.

 aeroplane
Aeroplanes are propelled by the thrust of a jet engine, a rocket engine, or airscrew (propeller), as well as combinations of these.
The wing of an aeroplane has the cross-sectional shape of an aerofoil, being broad and curved at the front, flat underneath (sometimes slightly curved), curved on top, and tapered to a sharp point at the rear.
It is so shaped that air passing above it is speeded up, reducing pressure below atmospheric pressure, and air passing below it is slower thus increasing pressure and providing a double effect.

 Aeroplane - Lexikon
Aeroplane is an English term which is also known as airplane in American English, which refers to a mechanically, power-driven heavier-than-air flying machine that has fixed wings deriving its lift in flight chiefly from aerodynamic reactions on surfaces which remain fixed under given conditions of flight.
The word should be used in preference to the generic term 'aircraft' when an airplane is specifically meant.
