The airline was established in 1933 as Linea Aerea Venezolana (LAV), when the Venezuelan government took over the routes and equipment of French company Cie Generale Aeropostale, which had begun operating in Venezuela in 1930.
Operations ceased in August 1994, but the airline was reactivated in January 1997, following its sale by the government to private company Alas de Venezuela.
Flights to the USA began in July 1998 and to Madrid in November 2001, although the latter have since ceased.

Feb. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Aeropostal Alas de Venezuela, the country's largest airline, expects to lose as much as $40 million of sales this year after the main highway connecting Caracas to the biggest airport closed last month.
Aeropostal, which controls about 70 percent of Venezuela's domestic air travel market, expects 2006 sales of about $240 million, less than the $280 million the company initially forecast, Aeropostal President Nelson Ramiz said.
Aeropostal's profit this year should be about 3 percent of sales, or $7.2 million, Ramiz said.
