The Gazelle is a helicopter developed as part of an Anglo - French venture between the Westland and Aérospatiale companies in 1968.
The SA341D became the Gazelle HT3 in RAF service, and was equipped as a helicopter pilot trainer.
Gazelles were also manufactured in Egypt by ABHCO.

Two French made SA.342L Gazelles were assembled from parts recovered from a number of captured Syrian wrecks in 1982 and used for technical evaluation.
This Gazelle was later used by 125 sqn for liaison work and airshow demonstrations.
Gazelles were used for ground attack and were normally armed with rocket pods and gun or cannon pods.

The Gazelle however is in widespread military service throughout the world, and a large number of military variants have been developed.
Like the larger Puma the Gazelle was the subject of a 1967 agreement that has seen it jointly built by Westland in the UK and Aerospatiale in France.
Apart from Westland, the Gazelle was also produced by Soko (SA-341H and SA-342L Partizan) in the former Yugoslavia, and 30 SA-342L were assembled by ABHCo in Egypt.

Still one of the fastest helicopters ever built (with a maximum speed of 193 mph), it has served with all four branches of the British armed forcesfilling a variety of roles.
