Following a general introduction to dragonflies, this report profiles the 14 species of the family Aeshnidae, the Darners, that are found in British Columbia.
While none of the dragonflies in the family Aeshnidae are officially endangered or threatened in British Columbia (Harding et al., 1994), their wetland habitats have been heavily impacted over the last 100 years.
In fact, all species of the family Aeshnidae known in North America north of California and west of Manitoba are included.

The hawkers (or darners in North America) (family Aeshnidae) include the largest dragonflies found in North America and Europe, and are among the largest of the dragonflies on the planet.
All are extremely hard to catch because of their flying abilities and keen sight.
There has been recently a proposal to split this family in Aeshnidae and Telephlebiidae (Hawking and Theischinger, 1999).

Species in the family Aeshnidae are separated from those in the other 3 families by:
Families of Odonata : Petaluridae, Gomphidae, Aeshnidae, Cordulegastridae, Macromiidae, Corduliidae, Libellulidae, Calopterygidae, Lestidae, Protoneuridae, and Coenagrionidae.
The Green Darner, Anax junius, is the only species of the family outside the genus Aeshna that occurs in this area.
