Topic: Aeterni regis

  Treaty of Tordesillas
It was intended to resolve the dispute that had been created following the return of Christopher Columbus.
In 1481 the papal Bull Aeterni regis had granted all land south of the Canary Islands to Portugal.
Naturally the Portuguese King John II was not happy, so he opened negotiations with King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain to move the line to the west, arguing that the meridian would extend all around the globe - limiting Spanish control in Asia.

With each new Pope came confirmation or derogation of previous bulls, issuances of new bulls and possibly a change of favorites.
When Sixtus IV came to power, he issued the bull Aeterni Regis 1481.
Aeterni Regis 1481 also brought Papal authority to bear on Castille and encouraged it to abide by the Treaty of Alcacovas.

Though the Church, of course, can survive without Roman culture, nonetheless God made use of the peculiar strong points of the Roman achievement in the first centuries of the Church, as He previously used the Greek accomplishments in philosophy to orient the beginnings of Christian theology and philosophy.
Indeed, at one time the liturgy contained a Postcommunion in the Mass "Pro Imperatore" which began thus: "aeterni Regis Evangelium Romanum imperium praeparasti.
The Gospel was preached throughout the Latin-speaking regions of the Empire, and later, when the Church began to penetrate lands never conquered by Rome, Catholic missionaries brought Latin culture with them—not forgetting what was said earlier about the Greek areas of Western culture and their missionary activity.
