Oswald of Northumbria - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Oswald's father Aethelfrith was the first ruler of a united Northumbria; Northumbria consisted of two kingdoms, Bernicia (in the north) and Deira (in the south), and the king of Bernicia, Aethelfrith, came to rule Deira as well around the year 604.
He was the son of Aethelfrith of Northumbria and came to rule after a period of exile, and he is best remembered as a Christian saint and martyr.
When Raedwald of East Anglia defeated and killed Aethelfrith at the River Idle around 616, a member of the Deiran line, Edwin, became king of Northumbria, and Oswald fled to Dalriada, where he was converted to Christianity by the monks of Iona.

In 617 AEthelfrith was defeated and slain at the river Idle by Raedwald of East Anglia, whom Edwin had persuaded to take up his cause.
This war may have been due partly to AEthelfrith's persecution of Edwin, but it had a strategic importance in the separation of the North Welsh from the Strathclyde Britons.

Aethelfrith died at the hands of Edwin, a prince whose father he had killed and whose kingdom of Deira (approximately Yorkishire) he had seized some years earlier.
While Aethelfrith remained a pagan, Edwin married a Christian bride from Kent and eventually accepted Christianity at the hands of a Roman missionary named Paulinus.
In time, the kingdoms of Bernicia and Deira came to be welded together to form the nucleus of the kingdom of Northumbria, which stretched from the Humber to the Forth.
