AETHELWULF   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
AETHELWULF, king of the West Saxons, succeeded his father Ecgberht in A.D. It is recorded in the Saxon Chronicle for 825 that he was sent with Eahlstan, bishop of Sherborne, and the ealdorman Wulfheard to drive out Baldred, king of Kent, which was successfully accomplished.
AEthelwulf's reign was chiefly occupied with struggles against the Danes.
In 853 AEthelwulf subdued the North Welsh, in answer to the appeal of Burgred of Mercia, and gave him his daughter AEthelswith in marriage.

 Aethelwulf: Worthy Successor?
Following in the difficult footsteps of Egbert, first-ever king of all England, was Aethelwulf, Egbert's son, who took the throne of Wessex in 839.
And as Egbert is known for being the first king of all England, Aethelwulf is known for being the first King of Wessex who really gave a up a lot of territory to the Northmen.
Old King Aethelwulf ruled in Kent and a few of the surrounding areas until his death in 858, when Aethelbald took over the whole of the kingdom.

Aethelwulf had crawled up to the top of the hill again, looking and waiting for the red flag that was his father's signal to them to advance.
Aethelwulf had been given about five hundred men to command, so it was quite a host that stood on the top of the hill looking down.
Aethelwulf presently struggled to his feet and made his way over to where the king of Mercia was surrounded by his surviving ealdormen and leading thanes.

 King Aethelwulf
Aethelwulf was the son of Egbert and a sub-king of Kent.
His reign is characterized by Viking invasions and repulsions common to all English rulers of the time, but the making of war was not his chief claim to fame.
Aethelwulf is remembered, however dimly, as a highly religious man who cared about the establishment and preservation of the church.

This was no more than a pleasant fiction intended to deceive no-one, but nevertheless perhaps proving a little helpful to morale at a time when Alfred saw his kingdom reduced to the Somerset marshes and the outlook dark indeed for the future of this West Saxon dynasty.
Macropaedia, Vol III, p202, Britain and Ireland History of: "...By this time Danish Viking raids were a grave menace and Aethelwulf, who succeeded his father Egbert in 839, had the wisdom to see that Mercia and Wessex must combine against the Vikings.
Friendly relations between them were established by marriage alliances and by a peaceful settlement of boundaries; this paved the way for the acceptance in 886 of Alfred, King of Wessex, as lord of all the English who had not fallen under Danish rule.

Members who are following the Timelines section may have noticed that recent entries are concerned with King Aethelwulf of Wessex and his sons.
I soon realised that there may well be some inaccuracies in the text of some of these submissions.
Result was that the Timeline for this King ended up over 600 words long, which I think you will agree is a touch long for a timeline entry.
