Luminiferous aether - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the late 19th century the luminiferous aether ("light-bearing aether"), or ether, was a substance postulated to be the medium for the propagation of light.
Electroweak theory and quantum field theory suggest that light could appear to move at different speeds in different directions in a medium such as a dense gas; the speed of light would be sensitive to motion relative to an ether and the refractive index of the medium.
Aether theory was dealt another blow when the Galilean transformation and Newtonian dynamics were both modified by Albert Einstein's special theory of relativity, giving the mathematics of Lorentzian electrodynamics a new, "non-aether" context.

General Relativity theory...the theory developed by Albert Einstein in 1916 which incorporated and extended the theory of special relativity to accelerated frames of reference and introduced the principle that gravitational and inertial forces were equivalent.

 PowerPedia:Aether theories - PESWiki
Aristotle included aether in the system of the classical elements of Ionic philosophy as the "fifth element" (the quintessence), on the principle that the four terrestrial elements were subject to change and moved naturally in straight lines while no change had been observed in the celestial regions and the heavenly bodies moved in circles.
According to him, electroweak theory and quantum field theory suggest that light could appear to move at different speeds in different directions in a medium such as a dense gas in contradiction with special relativity; the speed of light would be sensitive to motion relative to an ether and the refractive index of the medium.
Where LET said that constant velocity through the aether was undetectable, SR used this undetectability to reject the concept of an underlying aether as superfluous, and replaced a notional state of aether motion with it with the concept of the inertial frame.

Michelson-Morley experiment - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Physics theories of the late 19th century postulated that, just as water waves must have a medium to move across (water), and audible sound waves require a medium to move through (air), so also light waves require a medium, the "luminiferous aether".
If the aether were stationary relative to the sun, then the Earth's motion would produce a fringe shift one twenty-fifth the size of a single fringe.
Amongst the predictions of Einstein's later general theory of relativity is that there are gravitational waves across the universe, but as of 2005 this gravitational radiation seems to be too weak to have been detected so far.

 The Reference Frame: Aether compactification
The aether used to be a substance that was thought to fill the space and whose vibrations were identified with the electromagnetic waves.
These theories do not solve any problems, every new physical phenomenon in them is inherently incompatible with observations (they are at least as wrong as they are interesting), they effectively return us before 1905, and they show a lack of creativity of their authors.
Carroll and Tam use Jacobson's aether in a five-dimensional spacetime and choose the direction of the aether vector to be in the fifth, space-like dimension.

At the core of the Aether Physics Model is a mathematically correct Unified Force Theory, the first such theory to exist in modern science.

Michelson-Morley & the Story of the Aether Theory
The story of ether, or aether, is familiar to anyone who has studied the history of science and the seminal tale from the heroic age of physics of the Michelson-Morley experiment to establish whether or not light travels through a mysterious medium that fills space -- the ether.
If the theory of a stationary ether through which the earth moved were correct, then pointing one arm of the apparatus in the direction of the earth's travel through space would produce a displacement of the observed pattern of interference fringes amounting to 0.4 of a fringe width.
His theory, which quickly attained widespread currency and a wide measure of support made two key assumptions; first that the speed of light is constant, regardless of the speed of the source, and second, that there is no ether at absolute rest with respect to moving objects such as the earth.

The aether effectively "softens up" space, allowing masses to more easily bend it, and thus extending the effect of their gravity to greater distances.

 My H-aether Theory
H-aether theory is an attempt to describe the way in which light travels through free space.
It is based on the notion that light initially travels at c with respect to its source but subsequently changes speed as it traverses long distances.

Thus, because of the expansive momentum of the universe, the aether is being depleted in pressure, and exothermic reactions are replenishing that pressure.
Exothermy is a process by which aether escapes and helps to increase the pressure of the quantum vacuum, or the ocean of aether we call a universe.

This is a recurring problem in any aether theory: the experimental distinction between the effects of aether motion and those of waves carried by the aether is very difficult.
