LinuxPlanet - Previews - Preview: Aethera Brings Business-Level Contact Management to KDE2 - Linux Email for Business
Aethera seeks to provide the functionality of a Lotus Notes or, to a lesser extent, Outlook to the Linux desktop.
This includes taking full advantage of Aethera's plug-in architecture to let users -- the target audience is small to medium-sized businesses -- add what they need without producing an onerously bulky application.
A client-server arrangement is in the works, and while Aethera itself is GPLed, there will be some plug-ins that will be available only for a fee (though developers are of course free to produce others that they can distribute in any way they choose).

TheKompany declares that Aethera offers tools for the management of appointments and work tasks that withstand any comparison with commercial applications, thanks to the choice of entrusting all PIM functions in Aethera to a component that derives directly from KOrganizer, an application included in the office suite by KDE.org.
The group of developers that created Aethera, and in the past produced several applications based on Trolltech's QT libraries, is also working on another component that will allow all compatible applications to save information within the virtual file system of Aethera.

Interview with TheKompany's President, Shawn Gordon - OSNews.com
A couple of months ago we made a strategic decision to port the mail portion of Aethera onto Embedded Linux to round out our suite of applications that are PIM related on that platform.
We had been getting numerous requests, so we decided to bite the bullet and put off the 1.0 release of Aethera for a couple months, this did have the advantage of working going in to tighten the engine code that Aethera uses, so we expect it probably by early October at the latest.
Aethera, as it evolves, has a structure that is designed to allow you to communicate and manage your personal data in a much more intuitive fashion than anything I've seen to date.
