The Affiche Rouge ("Red Poster") was a famous Nazi propaganda poster during the Occupation regime in France.
The twenty-three members of an urban guerrilla group led by Missak Manouchian, a part of the communist Francs-Tireurs et Partisans de la Main d'Oeuvre Immigrée (FTP-MOI), were arrested by the French police on November 16, 1943 and executed by the Nazis on February 21, 1944.
In 1956, Louis Aragon wrote the eulogy L'affiche rouge in Le roman inachevé.

Called the "party of 80,000 executed people" (le parti des 80 000 fusillés), the PCF's electoral success after World War II was, to a large extent, due to its prestige as a centre of resistance.
The foreign workers' section, FTP-MOI (Franc Tireurs Partisans-Main d'Oeuvre Immigrée) became especially famous when the Missak Manouchian Group was captured, its members executed, and the execution publicly advertised in the infamous Affiche Rouge.
The term Francs-tireurs has been used for an armed fighter who, if captured, is not entitled to prisoner of war status.

In the European Breakfast thread this morning, Fran cites a French almanac, Hérodote, telling us that on today's date, 21 February, the Resistance fighters of the Affiche Rouge (Red Poster), were shot in 1944.
The Affiche Rouge was put out as anti-Resistance propaganda, presenting the Manoukian Group as dirty, dark, dangerous foreign extremists with (of course) unpronounceable names.
Later still, Léo Ferré set Aragon's words to music, and this version of the Affiche Rouge is well-known in France, certainly to the '68 generation.
