Earl P.L. Apfelbaum, Inc. | Coiled Postage Stamps
Today, when it seems that coin-operated vending machines have but recently become standard equipment for offices, factories, and places of public amusement, it may come as a bit of a surprise to learn that a variety of such machines were being marketed in the early 1880's.
Eleven knives on the coiling machine slit apart the ten rows of stamps and trim the margin of the outside rows as the roll is then wound, and simultaneously each row is wound into coil form until the labels previously pasted on are reached.
The operator at this points stops the machine, separates each coil from the roll by cutting the label, pastes the label as a binder for each coil, and places her initials or name on the binder.

How do coil stamps fit into your collection?
The coils from different companies and different types of vending and affixing machines are distinguishable by the number, size and pattern of the privately applied perforations they bear.
The coil strip of five Queen Elizabeth II Machin Head-design stamps shown in Figure 6, Scott MH7f, are distinguishable as coil stamps, because this se-tenant arrangement of five stamps exists only in a coil strip.
These syncopated perforations were accomplished by removing perforating pins from the horizontal rows of the perforating machines so that each stamp had two groups of four perforations separated by unperforated paper at the tops and bottoms of the stamps.

He was also found guilty of transferring machine guns without paying the applicable tax, without obtaining the prescribed written orders from the transferees and without affixing tax stamps to the orders.
These machine guns were certainly "designed to shoot, automatically or semi- automatically, more than one shot" within the statutory definition for a machine gun.
Since these machine guns were clearly not transferred as curiosities or ornaments, it is unnecessary to consider the statutory construction question whether they were "unserviceable" within the exemption clause (note 6, supra).

 Private Perforations on U.S. Stamps
Stamp vending machines provide cost savings in the distribution of stamps in that they allow stamps to be sold individually or in strips from a machine that need not necessarily be located in a post office nor require an attendant.
Many of the manufacturers of these machines added their own perforations to imperforate sheets of stamps provided by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in an effort to solve this problem.
While the Bureau was perfecting its own coil stamps for use in vending and affixing machines, the private manufacturers were tweaking their own machines and perforations.

Letter to the Editor (October 2002)
Lawrence concludes that this 3¢ coil issued sometime during the summer of 1910 was made by a machine that was first used about the middle of 1910.
The possibility that it was made by the new machines doesn't prove that the Government made this coil.
Their manufacturing technique differed significantly from that employed by BEP, and imparted different traits to the top and bottom edges of the stamps, which occasionally are useful in determining the authenticity of stamps believed to have affixing machine perforations.
