Open canals are usual in the Kabul valley, and in eastern Afghanistan generally; but over all the western parts of the country much use is made of the karez, which is a subterranean aqueduct uniting the waters of several springs, and conducting their combined volume to the surface at a lower level.
The declared object of this policy was to maintain the independence and integrity of Afghanistan, to secure the friendly alliance of its ruler, and thus to interpose a barrier of mountainous country between the expanding power of Russia in Central Asia and the British dominion in India.

The British evacuation of Afghanistan was settled on the terms proposed, and in 1881 the British troops also handed over Kandahar to the new amir.

I have used it for historical references because it is more informative than most modern encyclopedias.
The 1911 Edition of the Britannica is a classic; written before the age of "political correctness." Its authors had opinions and were not afraid to state them.
Had a great encyclopedia when I was a kid.
