Under the leadership of Abdul Qadeer, a staff of 120 personnel are re-building a weather infrastructure after years of Taliban-led violence and censorship.
During the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, the Afghanistan Meteorological Authority had one of the most advanced weather stations available at the time and a staff of 600.
The data is primarily for NATO and the armies of the U.S. and Germany, but it is shared with the Authority as well.

Today, Thursday 13 November, is the closing ceremony of the first session of courses held at the Afghan Meteorological Authority premises.
One hundred and fifteen persons, from the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry (MAAH), from the Afghan Meteorological Authority and from international and local NGOs, have been trained in instrumentation and observation practices, in crop stages and conditions reporting, in pest and diseases recognition in the field.
The courses have been given by FAO experts and by experts of the Afghan Meteorological Authority.
