Afonso Augusto Moreira Pena graduated in 1870 from the Faculty of Law in São Paulo.
Pena joined the administration of Francisco de Paula Rodrigues Alves, whom he studied with in São Paulo, and assumed the vice presidency on 25 Jun 1903.
During this campaign, Pena suffered a sudden illness and died in office on 14 Jun 1909.

Afonso Augusto Moreira Pena (Santa Bárbara, November 30, 1847 – Rio de Janeiro, June 14, 1909) was a Brazilian politician, president between 1906 and 1909.
Afonso Pena was the first Brazilian president to advocate intervening in the coffee economy.
The reorganization of the Brazilian army was done by Hermes Rodrigues da Fonseca during the Pena administration.
