Afraid of Sunlight was the last Marillion's last studio album with EMI, and also the last to be released on vinyl.
The "Brave" album and the tour that followed it had made mincemeat of my psyche and I was pretty much a lost soul.
Little wonder then that this album was to repeatedly examine show-business and the damage done.

Tux On, and extended it to album length.
In a supreme feat of concise understatement, the label's press release states simply that the album addresses fame and its effects on those who possess it, and completely fails to mention that all the effects covered are negative.
The album's protagonist, the King, is a sort of everyman tragic hero, on bad terms with his lover, the law, the media, and himself.

The name of the song refers to domestic violence and the fact that Hogarth (marillion's singer) connects spilt gazpacho soup (which is red) with blood on the woman's clothing from the wounds caused by the beating by her husband.
Afraid of Sunrise's twin Afraid of Sunlight has a couple of lyrics which are identical to Afraid of Sunrise.
The Afraid of Sunlight album as a whole is maybe Marillion's most coherent album up to now.

It's also one of their most consistent albums in the sense that only 'Beyond you' could be labeled as sub-par in comparison with the rest of the tracks.
Completing the album is 'Cannibal surf babe' (the *required* weird track) and 'Afraid of sunrise', both of which are also quite, quite good.
This was the 4th album released with Steve Hogarth.

“Afraid of sunlight” is better, the melodies are more enjoyable, the compositions are solid and the keyboard parts have regained their substantial part in the sound of the band.
Afraid of Sunlight feels more like a loose concept based around discarded pieces from Brave than anything else, but the quality of these "throwaways" and the craft put into each individual song is fantastic, with every individual member of the group giving 100% of their effort on every song.
Most of Marillion albums don't have so strong diversity (although all albums from the Hogarth era are very variated), and this is one of the things I like most of "Afraid of Sunlight"...

Brave (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Brave is an album by the group Marillion released in 1994.
Brave is a concept album, based on a news story Steve Hogarth heard on the radio about a girl who was taken into police custody after being found wandering the Severn Bridge.
This recording concept was later copied by Radiohead for their OK Computer album, which was also (musically) greatly influenced by Brave.

The tour was in support of the then current album marillion.com and many people felt Marillion had something to prove with this tour, bearing in mind that the previous Radiation tour had received a fair amount of criticism due no doubt to the setlist and a perceived denial of their illustrious past.
Unfortunately the beginning of the first song, "Go", is missing the first 30 seconds but rather than replace the track with one from a different show, Marillion elected to go ahead and release the gig as a kind of historical document of one particular night, warts and all.
"Afraid Of Sunlight" is performed to perfection and is received in a manner befitting such a wonderful song.

The result of the album's commercial failure would prove to be rather frustrating, as the band members felt devastated after the time, effort, and money that had been invested in the making of the record, and EMI, as usual, didn't help.
The decision was postponed, however, and not having many options, Marillion began to work on its next effort, Afraid of Sunlight, but not before a movie and a tour for Brave accompanied the bold release of the conceptual album.
In somewhat of a fortunate coincidence for the creation of Afraid of Sunlight, the band had just found a bigger location for The Racket Club, which allowed it to turn the place into a modest recording studio and, due to lack of funds, hold all the writing and recording sessions there.

Afraid of Sunlight (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Afraid of Sunlight is Marillion's eighth studio album, released in 1995.
In particular, "Afraid of Sunlight" relates to the likes of James Dean, while "Out Of This World" is about world land and water speed record holder Donald Campbell, killed in 1967.
Hogarth also cited OJ Simpson, on trial for murder at the time the album was recorded, as another influence on its theme.

Marillion - Biography - AOL Music
With 1985's Misplaced Childhood, an elaborate conceptual album reflecting Fish's formative experiences, Marillion earned their greatest success to date; the lush ballad "Kayleigh" reached the number two position on the U.K. charts, and became a hit in the U.S. as well.
Marillion's record label, EMI, gave the band a higher budget for the next album and the result of 15 months labor was Brave, a concept album that mixed classic symphonic progressive rock with standard rock.
The following release, Afraid of Sunlight, considerably altered the band's approach with great success -- it is the most consistent Marillion release to date.

This album introduces the band's dark, emotional and melodramatic style, with heavy influence from Genesis sonically, with a touch of Pink Floyd, as well as the overwrought vocal expressiveness of Peter Hammill.
This album is by far the darkest and heaviest of the first four, and songs like the opener, "Assassing" even have a hard rock feel to them.
The album is nothing close to being as derivative as the first album, nor is it as unfocused as Fugazi.

There are some very beautiful melodic moments and perhaps a better mix between calm and agressive melodies than on previous albums made with Steve Hogarth.

Its albums have ranged from the uplifting (1985's masterpiece "Misplaced Childhood") to the intensely depressing (1994's excellent "Brave"), and within its albums the band has explored musical styles from poppy (1992's "Holidays in Eden") to progressive (1984's amazing "Fugazi").
However, as is always the case with the band, the album as a whole is the focus, and the poppier songs are counteracted with more thoughtful, diverse and introspective numbers.
However, the best places to start with this Scotsman are the two compilation albums he issued in 1995, "Yin" and "Yang." They feature mostly re-recorded versions of Fish solo tunes, with some classic Marillion tracks (such as "Kayleigh," "Sugar Mice" and "Incommunicado") given the same treatment.

Marillion's eighth album is a true gem; an album that reflected the emotional frustrations of the band at the time of its recording.
The next track, "Afraid of Sunrise", as far as I understand, is the introduction to the following two tracks, "Out Of This World" and "Afraid Of Sunlight." A sort of overture indicative of the upcoming soundscapes, it relaxes the listener and is truly a preparation for the album's undeniable climax, "Out Of This World."
Then comes "Afraid Of Sunlight", the much-expected finale of an astounding three-song saga that ends on an undeniably catchy chorus, sharply standing out amongst its surrounding notes, yet maintaining the listener in a relaxed mood.

Since then he's released four studio albums (and one live set, the British import Live Wood); Modern Classics is a democratic collection, choosing three tracks from Paul Weller, four tracks from each of the rest, and adding one new single, "Brand New Start," for good measure.
There's not a loser in the lot, but the remarkable thing to note here is the coherence of this collection: Weller's mature rock and love of classic soul has resulted in a sound that's remained remarkably consistent over the course of the 1990s.
Kicking off with the anthemic "Transmission," the album takes listeners on a roller coaster ride through the garage-inspired landscape of "Now Always and Forever" to the disturbing and steamy underworld of "Nightclub," a place where David Bowie and Iggy Pop would have hung out during their Berlin years.
