The AfriNIC organizational structure is set to encourage a bottom-up self governance management model where policies and other organizational functions are determined by the community in general and members who elect representatives that sit on the Board of Directors.
AfriNIC also submitted a comprehensive, multi-phase transition plan, which was endorsed by the ICANN Board when it gave provisional recognition in September 20054.
AfriNIC has developed and implemented a comprehensive set of policies and procedures to ensure that the information it collects in the registration process will be kept in strict confidence, and used for registration purposes only.

In September 2004, the ICANN Board awarded provisional recognition to AfriNIC, with the expectation that they would fulfil their planned transition from the RIRs previously serving that region during early 2005.
AfriNIC and the Numbers Resource Organisation (NRO) recently announced that the three RIRs previously serving the AfriNIC region (APNIC, ARIN, and the RIPE NCC) transferred all RIR services to AfriNIC on 21 February 2005.
AfriNIC has now submitted to the ICANN Board an updated Application for Recognition, which includes summaries of their prior submissions, and details of their fulfilment of the ICP-2 Criteria for recognition.

 African internet users to save US$500m a year
AfriNic is the fifth RIR and is expected to handle all issues relating to Africa.The approval was widely expected after the Internet Assigned Names Authority (IANA) gave a clean bill of health in its public presentation at the meeting in Mar Del Plata, Argentina.
The idea of AfriNic was mooted by a small group of Africans attending a meeting in Canada in 1995.
AfriNic is currently registered and domiciled in Mauritius with other offices in South Africa and Egypt.

Where a Member of AfriNIC an entity other than a natural person, then the Member shall appoint a person as their representative to AfriNIC, and that person shall be eligible for election or appointment in the Member's stead, and shall be eligible to attend and vote at meetings in the Member's stead.

AfriNIC, created to distribute and administer domain names on the African continent, is to begin operations later this year, reports the Highway Africa News Agency (HANA) from the International Telecommunications Union's Telecom Africa 2004 conference in Cairo.
HANA says that the establishment of AfriNIC means that Africans will no longer have to pay Europe or the U.S. for the right to own a website address -- and this will positively impact the continent's foreign-exchange position.
HANA reports that although AfriNIC will not be accountable to ICANN, the two organizations will need to work together closely for the benefit of the international Internet community.
