The African Black Duck (Anas sparsa) is a species of duck of the genus Anas.
It lives in central and southern africa.It is also known as the african fl duck, fl duck, fl river duck, west african fl duck,South african fl duck, and the ethiopian fl duck.
It is a medium sized duck and is similar in size but when seen in pairs the male is noticeably bigger.Their egg quantity ranges from 4 to 8 eggs.

In the USA the American Black Duck has seriously declined where Mallards have been introduced into Black Duck areas, while in southern USA the Mexican Duck is now extinct (all the remaining birds were found to be hybrids) and has been removed from the US Species Endangered List.
The greatest threat is to the Yellow-billed Duck, the African equivalent of the Mallard.
A Yellow-billed Duck banded in Cape Town was picked up in Zambia, and the hybrids could be expected to have the same capabilities thus putting the entire Yellow-billed Duck population in Africa at risk.

Harlequins are one of a few unrelated duck species throughout the world that have become “river specialists.” During the breeding season, the South American torrent duck, New Zealand blue duck, African fl duck, and harlequin seek rapidly flowing streams and rivers for nesting and rearing young.
Harlequins are better able than other ducks to contend with strong currents, spending a greater proportion of their foraging time under water among current-swept rocks and boulders.

Along the R712 in the west of Golden Gate NP, a small hide overlooks a dam where various waterfowl, including African Black Duck as well as various egrets may be present, the latter breeding in partially-submerged trees in summer.
African Rock Pipit and Mountain Chat may be heard and seen in rocky areas in the valleys, where Ground Woodpeckers and Pied Starlings nest in roadside embankments and erosion gulleys.
This is a great area for waterbirds (including South African Shelduck and Cape Shoveller) and shorebirds, large concentrations of which may be present, particularly when the water level of the Bloemhof Dam within the reserve is low enough to expose shoreline and mudbanks.

 BLNG - Gauteng birding report
The Cullinan area offered calling African Rail, Red-chested Flufftail and Dark-capped Yellow Warbler, while Roodplaat was ever reliable with several views of at least two Bitterns – one of which was watched as it hunted a short distance away.
Several African Rail were seen, and other local specials (for the Gauteng region) included no less than 17 South African Shelduck, Fantailed Widowbird, Yellow Canary and a lazy circling African Marsh Harrier.
Several Northern Black Korhaan greeted the dawn at a site where later on in the spring they will be found performing their strange collective display.

We photographed the African Black Duck and Mountain Wagtail (left), saw all the sunbirds and the hill babbler, but missed the White-browed Robin-Chat (we caught up with it later in the Masai Mara).
Sometimes African Golden Oriole, usually the local race of Common Kestrel, Verreaux's Eagle, African Cuckoo (by November perhaps European cuckoos will be there too; canoris and gularis are now split, remember), Red-fronted Barbets and Red-fronted Tinkerbirds are about the lodge (in acacias), I think Spotted-flanked Barbets too.

African Finfoot and Pel’s Fishing Owl had not been seen in the Northern, (public) sector of the reserve for some time.
A cracking fly-by Black Harrier was ample compensation, before we drove on for lunch at a small café in Langebaan overlooking the lagoon.
We played tape for African Rock Pipit and heard two but could not pick them out on their distant cliff-edge perches, and despite Herculean efforts I also failed to flush any Mountain Pipits, although Robin flushed one when we had spit up to cover more ground, a bird which steadfastly refused to show again.
