Jacana - Article by Warwick Tarboton
Not all jacana species carry their young, and the ability or otherwise of the different species to do this appears to he related to the presence or absence of an unusual modification to the shape of the radius bone in the wing.
African Jacana chicks become less and less tied to the male as they grow older, and males sometimes start a second breeding cycle before their first brood is flying.
The female African Jacana's great capacity to lay successive clutches of eggs, her emancipation from parental duties, and her dominance over males, meant that she could pick and choose between males as partners, laying successive clutches for either a string of partners, or all the clutches for a single partner, as circumstances dictated.

 African Jacana (Actophilornis africana)
Since African Jacana’s eggs and young chicks are often preyed upon, the survival of this species is largely dependent on the mother’s ability to lay several clutches of eggs in one season.
African Jacanas are not known to be monogomous in their mating patterns.
The male African Jacana is the main caretaker of the offspring, incubating the eggs and carrying the baby chicks under his wings to keep them warm and dry until the chicks are approximately 18 days old.

 African Jacana
Jacana eggs are among the most stunningly marked of any birds', being rich brown in colour, heavily overlaid with thick, scribbled fl lines.
This solar dependence may explain why jacanas are essentially tropical birds and why, at the southern end of their range (in South Africa) African Jacanas lay mainly during the five mid-summer months (November-March) whereas closer to the equator they breed in all months of the year.
The immature African Jacana has the same general colour pattern as Lesser Jacana (white front, brown back, striped head pattern) and the two are easily confused in the field.
