The African Mourning Dove (Streptopelia decipiens) is a pigeon which is a widespread resident breeding bird in Africa south of the Sahara.
Despite its name, it is not a close relative of the American Mourning Dove, Zenaida macroura.
The African Mourning Dove is a largish, stocky pigeon, up to 31cm in length.

Thought to be a descendant of the African Collared Dove, this species was introduced in the Bahamas and has spread to Florida and southern Georgia, Mississippi and Alabama; is quickly spreading over a wider range.
It is commonly found among Mourning Dove flocks.
They are common, and if you don't think you've seen one in Florida, you probably have and mistook it for a Mourning Dove.

The Gambia, the smallest country in Africa, provides an excellent introduction to African birding.
Over our recent two week Venture, we counted 275 species, mostly African but this included a good selection of Palearctic migrants.
The habitats within The Gambia varied from coastal and salt marshes, to riparian forest along the Gambia River, dry acacia forests and grassland savanna.
