 Birding the Republic of the Congo
With over 400 bird species in the region, a very high proportion of the national avifauna and approximately two thirds of which are endemic to the Guineo-Congolian Region, only a few of the characteristic species for each habitat can be recorded here.
The extensive seasonally flooded forests are very rich with some 120 species (75% of which are common with nearby dry land rain forest) recorded in the sublittoral zone between 12 km and 22 km inland.
Several species occur only in the more humid regions near the western limits of the park: African Piculet Sasia africana, African Broadbill Smithornis capensis, Blue-shouldered Robin-Chat Cossypha cyanocampter, Tit-hylia Pholidornis rushiae, Red-eyed Puffback Dryoscopus senegalensis and Grey-throated Barbet Gymnobucco bonapartei is widespread throughout Marantaceae forest as well as in secondary forest near villages.

 Tropical Birding Cameroon tour report, April 2003
African Grey Parrots were pinging and meowing from almost every tree top.
A mixed flock of African Green Pigeons and Splendid Glossy Starlings feasted on a fruiting treetop nearby and a Broad-billed Roller hawked moths from the end of a snag in the distance.
An African Goshawk was chirping away from a nearby fig as we left.

Also, as a complete novice on African birds, this was primarily a familiarisation trip and the bird list is rather limited, mainly due to my inability to ID birds on call in the forest.
The first birds identified were Pied Crows around the control tower, a Laughing Dove and African Pied Wagtail in the car park, whilst a swift flock proved a little more elusive (both Little and African Palm Swifts were identified here on our return trip).

During breakfast Yaya came to find us as he was due to take some birders to Pirang, all but one had dropped out due to ‘Banjul belly’ so instead of the lazy ramble around Fajara golf course and the Kotu area we joined in with the morning trip.
I was a little concerned as the main purpose of this trip was bird photography which requires more time than general ‘number crunch’ birding, however it turned out to be quite productive in both aspects.
Along the road we added Blue-bellied, Rufous-crowned and Abyssinian Rollers, which were all very common and seen on wires and trees beside the road, as well as Black Kite and Black-shouldered Kite, the latter posed for photographs.

 Tropical Birding report on a birdwatching trip to Nigeria
This ranch was started back in the 40's by Scottish immigrants, and they later opened up a hotel that attracted Nigerians and ex-pats alike wanting to escape the heat of the humid lowlands.
Once you get up there the vista is unforgettable, and you have splendid eye-level views of birds that would normally be difficult to see at all from the forest floor.
A west African endemic, we saw them regularly around the edge of lowland forest.
