  Silverbills
Silverbills, like many other mannikins, are difficult to sex visually; consequently, the most reliable method of sexing silverbills is listening for the song of the male.
All three silverbills are peaceful birds that are ideal companions in mixed flights, where silverbills (parents and young) can also be kept together after the breeding season has ended (when juveniles, which often want to continue roosting with their parents, will not make it difficult for the parents to tend another clutch of eggs).
African and Indian silverbills generally do not need live food to raise young successfully, but there is no reason not to give them live food if they enjoy it.

 African Silverbill - Lonchura cantans
The head and back are a yellowish brown, while the rump and upper tail coverts are fl; the rest of the tail is flish brown as are the wings (which have barring on the secondary wing feathers); the breast, sides, and belly are a pale yellow brown; the beak and eyelids are silver.
Note: the Indian Silverbill (Lonchura malabarica, also known as the Common Silverbill, White-rumped Silverbill, White throated Munia, or White-throated Silverbill) looks nearly identical to the African Silverbill, but its rump is white instead of fl and it lacks the barring on its secondaries.
The male African Silverbill's song is a rising then falling pattern of rapidly repeated notes which forms a sweet trill.

Birds of Porini   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The first time visitor to Porini, or indeed Kenya, may feel somewhat overwhelmed by the numbers of birds and individual species that can be seen in the vicinity of the Camp and the Conservation Area, the neighbouring Amboseli Reserve and in the country itself.
Kenya, straddling the Equator, hosts large numbers of Palearctic migrants, particularly raptors and waders, primarily from Eastern Europe, during the Northern Hemisphere winter, but the accompanying observations follow a visit to Porini over a weekend in June, when the birds recorded were all Kenya residents.
As the vegetation becomes more sparse heading towards the mainly dry lake bed, so the bird life also changes and it is a chance to look out for some of the less common species not seen nearer to the Camp.
